Durante el exilio en Babilonia, los judíos habían perdido el templo para continuar sus ceremonias. Eso les obligó a buscar otra forma de continuar la práctica de su fe. Fue entonces que comenzaron a reunirse en las casas para la lectura de las Escrituras y su comentario. Así nacieron las sinagogas.
Después del regreso a su tierra y de la reconstrucción del templo, se conservó la costumbre de continuar reuniéndose como sinagogas en las casas. Las reuniones se realizaban en los aposentos altos que se reservaban para ese propósito. Las sinagogas, o reuniones en las casas, se convirtieron así en un elemento paralelo al culto en el templo.
Siglos después, en época de Jesús, la sinagoga era ya una institución. Hoy existe evidencia que la casi totalidad de sinagogas que se mencionan en los evangelios eran, en realidad, reuniones en las casas.
Después de la resurrección de Jesús, todos los discípulos que habían quedado eran judíos. Por ello, no debe extrañarnos que los apóstoles se reunieran en un aposento alto para orar. De igual manera, cuando la iglesia nace, no debe extrañarnos que siendo todos judíos, comenzaran a reunirse en las casas para reflexionar sobre su fe.
Cuando el evangelio llegó a ciudades paganas, el modelo de reunión judía fue adoptado junto con el evangelio. Y así, las iglesias siguieron la tradición de reunirse en las casas. El evangelio se extendió de manera sorprendente y adquirió vitalidad. Eso duró aproximadamente unos 300 años hasta que la institucionalización se impuso. Hoy, debemos rescatar las lecciones del pasado para la revitalización del evangelio en nuestros días.

From the synagogue to the Christian meetings.

During the exile in Babylon, the Jews had lost the temple to continue their ceremonies. That forced them to find another way to continue the practice of their faith. It was then when they began to gather in houses to read and comment on the Scriptures. This is how the synagogues were born.

After returning to their land and rebuilding the temple, the custom of continuing to gather as synagogues in houses was preserved. The meetings were held in the upper rooms that were reserved for that purpose. The synagogues, or gatherings in houses, thus became a parallel element to the worship in the temple.

Centuries later, in the time of Jesus, the synagogue was already an institution. Today there is evidence that almost all of the synagogues mentioned in the Gospels were actually meetings in houses.

After the resurrection of Jesus, all the disciples who had remained were Jews. Therefore it is no surprise that the apostles met in an upper room to pray. Similarly, when the church is born, being all Jews, we must not be surprised to see that they began to gather in the houses to reflect on their faith.

When the Gospel came to pagan cities, the Jewish meeting model was adopted along with the Gospel. And so, the churches followed the tradition of meeting in houses. The gospel amazingly spread and acquired vitality. That lasted for about 300 years until the institutionalization was imposed. Today, we must rescue the lessons of the past for the revitalization of the gospel in our days.

CÉLULAS CONTRA LA VIOLENCIA

San Salvador es la tercera ciudad más violenta del mundo. Después de Ciudad Juárez en México y San Pedro Sula en Honduras. El problema de la violencia de las pandillas es una de nuestras mayores preocupaciones como cristianos. Las razones por las que los jóvenes invierten inútilmente sus vidas en una pandilla son diversas. Pero, un elemento muy constante es la desintegración familiar.
La iglesia, llamada a transformar las situaciones de pecado, hace un esfuerzo para contribuir a resolver el problema. Las células acercan a los cristianos a las personas y eso les permite conocer a los niños que están creciendo en hogares desintegrados. Animamos a los miembros de nuestras células a adoptar emocionalmente a un niño de esos. Es decir, a brindarle la atención, el cariño y la aceptación que no encuentran en sus hogares. Aceptación que irán a buscar en una pandilla a menos que los cristianos les brinden una alternativa.
De esa manera, nuestras células permiten dar respuestas que otras medidas no han podido dar hasta hoy. No se debe olvidar que también poseemos más de 1,500 células infantiles donde se atiende un promedio de 22,000 niños. El tema de la violencia y del perdón se desarrollan como temas de enseñanza semanal. Los líderes de células infantiles han sido instruidos en asuntos tales como el abuso verbal, físico y sexual. La idea, es dar una solución al grave problema de violencia juvenil que vive nuestro país.
Todo esto, por supuesto, aparte del trabajo que se hace con los enfermos, los matrimonios, los problemas de alcoholismo, etc.

Cells against violence.
San Salvador is the third most violent city in the world, after Ciudad Juarez in Mexico and San Pedro Sula in Honduras. The problem of gang violence is one of our major concerns as Christians. The reasons why young people needlessly spend their lives in a gang are diverse. But a very constant element is family disintegration.
The church, called to transform situations of sin, makes an effort to help solve the problem. The cells bring Christians near to people and that allows them to meet children who are growing up in disintegrated homes. We encourage members of our cells to emotionally adopt one of those children. That is, to provide the care, affection and acceptance they are lacking in their homes. Acceptance they will go out looking for in a gang unless Christians provide them with an alternative.

Doing this, our cells can give answers in a way that other measures have failed to give today. Let’s not forget that we also have over 1,500 children cells where an average of 22,000 children is assisted. The theme of violence and forgiveness are developed as weekly teaching topics. The children’s cell leaders have been instructed on issues such as verbal, physical and sexual abuse. The idea is to give a solution to the serious problem of youth violence that is lived in our country.

All of this is besides, of course, the work done with the sick, the marriages, and the alcoholism problems, etc.

LA COMUNIDAD COMO PARTE DE LA FE

Como lo he escrito en otras ocasiones, cuando un trabajo celular lleva ya bastante tiempo llega a convertirse en parte de la cultura cristiana de las personas. Nuevas generaciones de creyentes se suman a la actividad celular y, con ello, ingresan a las células de manera tan natural como ingresan a la vida cristiana.
Las relaciones de comunidad se producen de manera, igualmente natural. Ser cristiano, incluye el ser miembro de una célula. Ser miembro de una célula proporciona una base para relacionarse con otras personas. El sentido de comunidad y de evangelización están implícitas en la vida cristiana dentro de una iglesia celular madura.
Al hablar de madura, me refiero a aquellas iglesias que llevan más de una década en el trabajo y que sostienen la experiencia de lograr conversiones dentro del modelo. Las personas creen en una iglesia celular dinámica.
Desde ese punto de vista, el papel del líder sigue siendo importante. Pero, no necesita hacer muchos esfuerzos para establecer esos lazos de amistad. La comunidad se estable por una inercia que viene de la fuerza de una tradición muy bien establecida.
Claro, esa incorporación de la vida celular a la cultura evangélica es el resultado de un trabajo cotidiano, paciente y constante. Los que hoy siembran con esperanza, cosecharán con gozo.

The community as part of the faith.

As I have written on other occasions, after some time a cell work becomes part of the Christian culture of the people. New generations of believers join in the cellular activity and, in this way they enter the cells as naturally as they enter in Christian life.

Community relations occur as equally natural. Being a Christian includes being a cell member. To be a cell member provides a foundation for relating with others. The sense of community and evangelization are implicit in the Christian life within a mature cell church.

Speaking of mature, I mean those churches who have more than a decade in the work and have the experience to achieve conversions within the model. People believe in a dynamic cell church.

From that point of view, the leader's role remains significant. But do not need to make many efforts to stablish those friendship ties. The community is established by an inertia that comes from the strength of a well established tradition.

EDIFICANDO MEGA IGLESIAS.

Existen varios modelos de plantación de iglesias que siguen las iglesias celulares. En nuestro caso, hemos optado por establecer mega iglesias en lugar de muchas iglesias. De hecho, cuando se adoptó el trabajo celular, teníamos alrededor de 22 iglesias en la ciudad capital. Como parte de la adopción del modelo celular se tomó la decisión de cerrar esas iglesias para centralizar el esfuerzo en una sola mega iglesia.
Desde entonces, Elim ha estado enfocada en muy pocas iglesias pero que llegan a ser bastante numerosas. En un país como El Salvador, solamente tenemos unas 40 iglesias. Si eso se compara, por ejemplo, con las Asambleas de Dios que tienen más de 1,100 iglesias en el país, resulta ser una cantidad muy pequeña.
Las razones son varias. Una es que solamente unificando las fuerzas la iglesia ha podido alcanzar grandes metas como la televisión, las radios, los terrenos, los edificios. Si las fuerzas estuvieran dispersas en varias iglesias, cada una tendría sus propios proyectos y difícilmente podría alcanzarse algo que impactara el país. Impactar como la televisión, por ejemplo, que transmite 24 horas diarias cubriendo todo el país.
Una mega iglesia también desarrolla una influencia política considerable dentro de la sociedad. Eso permite que la iglesia tenga los elementos como para influir en la toma de decisiones, promulgación de leyes, etc. La iglesia se convierte en una protagonista e interlocutora frente al Estado. Eso supone la tentación de capitalizar la fuerza en un sentido partidario; pero, si se mantiene la ecuanimidad, la influencia puede usarse para ejercer una influencia ética y ejemplar.
Otras de nuestras iglesias han construido los edificios más grandes en el interior del país y, eso, les permite desarrollar diversos proyectos de beneficio para sus comunidades. Obviamente, no nos oponemos en ninguna manera a que otras iglesias sigan una política de plantación agresiva de iglesias. Ni siquiera me atrevería a recomendar que se siguiera nuestra política. No obstante, esa política tiene sus razones y, eso, es lo que he tratado de exponer.

Building mega churches.
There are several models of church planting that cell churches follow. In our case, we have opted to set up mega churches instead of many churches. In fact, when the cell work was adopted, we had about 22 churches in the capital city. As part of the adoption of the cell model the decision to close those churches was taken to centralize the effort into one mega church.
Since then, Elim has been focused on very few churches, but, that have come to be quite numerous. In a country like El Salvador, we only have about 40 churches. If that is compared, for example, with the Assemblies of God that has more than 1,100 churches in the country, this number becomes a very small amount.
The reasons are various. One is that only unifying forces, the church has been able to achieve great goals as the television, the radios, the land, the buildings. If the efforts were scattered in several churches, each one would have their own projects and it would be very difficult to achieve something that would impact the country. To impact such as the television does, for example, which broadcasts 24 hours a day covering the whole country.
A mega church also performs a considerable political influence within society. That allows the church to have the elements to influence decision making, enactment of laws, etc. The church becomes a protagonist and a speaker before the State. SACERDOTES EN TIERRA EXTRAJERA

Alrededor de dos millones de salvadoreños viven fuera del territorio nacional, principalmente en los Estados Unidos de América. Una parte de ellos salieron del país por causa de la guerra civil, otros para huir de la situación de desempleo del país. Al encontrarse fuera de su tierra, los salvadoreños experimentan nostalgia por el país que dejaron. A eso, los salvadoreños en la diáspora le llaman ‘mal de país.’
Esa condición, es el caldo de cultivo sobre el cual el trabajo celular se desarrolla de manera efectiva. En la células, los salvadoreños se reencuentran a otros compatriotas, reencuentran las memorias, las expresiones, etc. Es así como las células se han ido multiplicando y, posteriormente, convirtiéndose en filiales de Elim en El Salvador.
Un poco más de 44 filiales se han establecido de esa manera en los Estados Unidos. Y ese número continúa en constante expansión. Esas iglesias no fueron plantadas como resultado de un plan estratégico o el envío de misioneros. Fueron iglesias que surgieron de manera espontánea. El elemento activador de ese fenómeno es el entrenamiento que esos cristianos salvadoreños tuvieron en Elim. Como líderes de células, aprendieron sobre el sacerdocio de todos los creyentes en la práctica. Para ellos, el encontrarse en otro país, no anula sus responsabilidades cristianas.
Probablemente, este sea un modelo de plantación de iglesias que responde más a la pasión por la evangelización y a la acción del Espíritu Santo que cualquier otro elemento. A la vez, esto confirma la verdad de capacitar a los santos para la obra del ministerio y liberarlos para ejercitar el sacerdocio de todos los creyentes.

Priests in a foreign land.
Around two million Salvadorans live outside the country, mainly in the United States of America. One part of them left the country because of the civil war, others to flee the country's unemployment situation. Salvadorans experience nostalgia for the country they left when they find themselves out of their homeland. That is called by Salvadorans in the Diaspora “homesickness for the country.”
This condition is the breeding ground on which cell work develops effectively. In the cell, the Salvadorans are reunited with their compatriots, memories, expressions, etc.. This is how the cells have been multiplying and then becoming a branchurch of Elim in El Salvador.
A little over 44 branchurches have been set that way in the United States. And that number continues to steadily expand. Those churches were not planted as a result of a strategic plan or the sending of missionaries. These were churches that emerged spontaneously. The trigger element of this phenomenon is the training that those Salvadoran Christians had at Elim. As cell leaders, they learned by practice about the priesthood of all believers. For them, to find themselves in another country does not annul their Christian responsibilities.

This is probably a church planting model that responds more to the passion for evangelism and the action of the Holy Spirit, than any other element. At the same time, this confirms the truth of equipping the saints for the work of the ministry and releasing them to exercise the priesthood of all believers.

LA PARADOJA DE LAS ESTADÍSTICAS

Se ha dicho que las estadísticas deben ser actualizadas, exactas y recoger la información suficiente como para monitorear adecuadamente el trabajo. En la medida que las estadísticas son mejores, se convierten en una herramienta más eficiente para nuevos alcances.
Pero, al mismo tiempo, se puede producir el problema de que las estadísticas llegan a ser tan completas que pueden llegar a sustituir a la realidad. Es decir, las personas que monitorean pueden confiarse tanto de las buenas estadísticas que terminan sustituyendo la realidad misma por los reportes.
A partir de allí, las metas, proyecciones, evaluaciones y los aspectos principales del trabajo se harán sobre la base de una realidad de papel y tinta; pero no la auténtica realidad. En tal caso, las estadísticas se convierten en una barrera para accesar a la realidad.
Esa es la paradoja de las estadísticas. Debemos esforzarnos por tener estadísticas cada vez más eficientes, pero al mismo tiempo se esta construyendo un instrumento que puede alejarnos de la realidad en lugar de acercarnos.
Para evitar tal paradoja, quienes monitorean, deben estar siempre en continuo contacto con la realidad. Deben estar inmersos en el trabajo real de las casas. Deben relacionarse permanentemente con la vida de las células y confrontar constantemente la realidad con las estadísticas. Solamente así las estadísticas no perderán su verdadera utilidad.

The statistics paradox.

It has been said that statistics should be updated, accurate and collect enough information to monitor the work properly. The statistics become a more efficient tool for new achievements as they are improved.

But at the same time, a problem of statistics becoming so complete that they may replace the reality can occur. That is, that people who monitor can rely so much on good statistics that end up replacing reality itself for the reports.

From there on, goals, projections, evaluations and key aspects of the work will be done based on a reality of paper and ink, but not on the true reality. In such a case, statistics become a barrier to access reality.
That is the statistics paradox. We must strive to have even more efficient statistics, but at the same time a tool that can move us away from reality instead of bringing us closer to it, is being built.
To avoid such paradox, who monitors, must always be in continuous contact with reality, and must be immersed in the real work of the houses, must permanently relate with the life of the cells and continuously confront the reality with the statistics. Only then the statistics will not lose their true benefit.

LAS FINANZAS Y EL NOMBRAMIENTO DE NUEVOS PASTORES

Normalmente no llevamos en la iglesia estadísticas de cuánto dinero recoge un líder o un supervisor. Consecuentemente, la recaudación financiera no es un factor que se tenga en cuenta a la hora de promover a una persona a la posición de pastor. No habría manera de demostrar que una persona ha sido o no efectiva en el aspecto financiero.
Pero, de manera indirecta, es verdad que las finanzas van implícitas en cada promoción. Las ofrendas son proporcionales a la cantidad de células de que se dispone. A mayor cantidad de células es lógico pensar que habrá mayor recaudación de ofrendas. Siendo la multiplicación uno de los factores más importantes a la hora de seleccionar a un nuevo pastor, con ella, va también la multiplicación de las ofrendas. Aunque no se lleve cuenta de ello.
Por ese motivo, es que anteriormente expresé que el mismo desarrollo de las células va creando la base para incorporar nuevos pastores al equipo de trabajo. No hay que anticiparse a los hechos pensando en cómo la iglesia enfrentará el tema de un nuevo salario. Cuando se necesite un nuevo pastor, será solamente porque hay más personas participando de la vida cristiana en la congregación. Una de esas participaciones es el ofrendar.

Finances and the appointment of new ministers
In the church we normally do not keep statistics of the amount of money a leader or a supervisor gathers. Consequently, the financial recovery is not a factor taken into account when promoting a person to the position of pastor. There would be no way to prove that a person has been financially effective or not.
But, indirectly, it is true that the finances are implicit in each promotion. The offerings are proportional to the amount of cells you have. The greater the number of cells, it is logical to think there will be a greater collection of offerings. Since the multiplication is one of the most important factors when selecting a new pastor, implied in it is also the multiplication of offerings. Even though we do not keep track of it.
For that reason, I had previously expressed that the same cell development creates the basis to incorporate new pastors to the team work. We must not anticipate to the facts thinking on how the church will face the issue of a new salary. If a new pastor is needed, it will be only because more people are participating of the Christian life in the congregation. Offering is one way of participating.

METAS FINANCIERAS DE LAS CÉLULAS

Sin duda que las ofrendas que se recogen en las células son muy importantes para las finanzas de la iglesia. Cuando surgió la oportunidad de comprar la última frecuencia disponible de televisión de cobertura nacional que había en El Salvador, la iglesia tomó un gran crédito bancario. La cuota mensual suponía una carga bastante alta para las finanzas de la iglesia. Pero, un año después, surgió la oportunidad de comprar 14 hectáreas de tierra. El precio era una verdadera oferta pero la iglesia ya había llegado a su límite de capacidad de pago.
Pero, como en otras ocasiones, decidimos echar mano de nuestros líderes de células. Lo que hicimos fue dividir la cuota mensual entre la cantidad de líderes. Eso significa dos dólares por cada célula a la semana. Dado que la asistencia promedio en nuestras células de adultos es de 9, basta con que cada miembro de la célula aporte veinticinco centavos de dólar a la semana para completar el pago.
De esa manera, llevamos ya cerca de cinco años cancelando el préstamo y ya pagamos más de la mitad. Creo que con el trabajo esforzado de cada líder terminaremos de pagar sin mayor dificultad. Tales cosas no habrían sido posibles sin un compromiso financiero entre las células y la iglesia.

Cells’ financial goals
There is no doubt that the offerings gathered in cells are very important to the finances of the church. When the opportunity to purchase the last available TV frequency of national coverage in El Salvador came up, the church took a big bank loan. The monthly fee involved a rather high burden on the finances of the church. But a year later, the opportunity to buy 14 hectares of land came up. The price was a real offer, but the church had already reached its ability to pay limit.

But, as on other occasions, we decided to draw on our cell leaders. What we did is that we split the monthly fee among the number of leaders. That means two dollars a week per each cell. Since the average attendance in our adult’s cells is of 9, the contribution of twenty five dollar cents per week from each cell member is enough to complete the payment.
Thus, we are close to five years now paying the loan and we have already paid off more than half. I believe that with each leader´s exerted work we will finish to pay it without much difficulty. Such things would not have been possible without a financial commitment between the cells and the church.

LAS MEGA IGLESIAS Y LA INFLUENCIA POLÍTICA

Normalmente se piensa que la política no es competencia de los cristianos. Pero, todos nos lamentamos de lo mal que van las cosas por falta de principios y de integridad. La política debe ser asumida por lo que debe ser: un área de servicio para los ciudadanos. Servir honestamente es lo que mejor pueden hacer los cristianos y, por ello, son ellos los que deben enseñar a la sociedad lo que es correcto.
La política no necesariamente debe ser partidaria y electoral. Los cristianos pueden influir mucho en política desde su condición de hijos de Dios. De hecho la iglesia ya se pronuncia en temas tales como el aborto, la corrupción, la pena de muerte y otros temas de carácter ético. Pero todos esos temas tienen un gran peso político en nuestras sociedades. Quien toma en serio el evangelio no podrá sustraerse de adoptar posiciones con implicaciones políticas.
Desde esa perspectiva, las mega iglesias juegan un papel muy importante en la tarea de ser luz y sal a un país. No es que el tamaño determine la calidad de esa influencia sino que, desde el punto de vista de los políticos, una iglesia muy numerosa es mejor escuchada y tenida en cuenta.
Desde una mega iglesia se puede sensibilizar a los políticos en cuanto a temas que son trascendentes para la causa del evangelio. Y también se puede, con su influencia ética, disuadir a los políticos de ciertas decisiones incorrectas. Esta es una de las ventajas de ser una mega iglesia celular.

The mega churches and the political influence.

It is normally thought that politics is out of Christian’s competence. But we all bewail how bad things are going because of the lack of principles and integrity. Politics must be assumed for what it should be: a service area for citizens. The best thing Christians could do is to serve with honesty and that is way, they are who should teach society what’s right.

Politics do not have to be necessarily partisan and electoral. Christians from their condition as of children of God can influence greatly in politics. In fact the church has already spoken on issues such as the abortion, corruption, death penalty and other ethical issues. But all of those issues have a great political weight in our societies.
Whoever takes the Gospel seriously won’t be able to escape from adopting positions with political implications.
From that perspective, mega churches play a very important role in the task of being salt and light to a country. It is not the size which determines the quality of that influence, but from the politicians point of view a very numerous church is better heard and taken into account.

From a mega church you can sensitize politicians about issues that are transcendente to the cause of the Gospel. And with your ethical influence, you can also deter politicians from certain wrong decisions. This is one of the advantages of being a mega cell church.

LAS MEGA IGLESIAS Y LA MUERTE AL YO

Ser pastor de una mega iglesia es un don que Dios otorga. Lo otorga a personas que ha preparado para ese fin. La preparación consiste, fundamentalmente, en la muerte al yo.
Ninguna iglesia puede crecer más que su pastor. Y para que el pastor crezca debe comenzar por la negación propia como fundamento básico. La muerte al yo se produce cuando se viven sucesivas noches del alma. El camino no es fácil, mas bien es doloroso. Pero si hablamos de una mega iglesia sostenible en el tiempo no hay otra alternativa que la de atravesar el valle de sombra de muerte una y otra vez.
La muerte al yo deja al hombre en un estado de postración. Y no habrá otra opción más que la de dar toda la gloria a Dios. Cuando se alcanza ese reconocimiento profundo es cuando el hombre está preparado para guiar una mega iglesia. Lo hará con temor y temblor, sabiendo que él no es nada más que polvo recogido por la mano de Dios y al cual sopló aliento de vida.
Tal dependencia absoluta de la gracia de Dios será clave para perseverar en esa sagrada labor.

The mega churches and dying to the flesh.
Being a pastor of a megachurch is a gift that God concedes. It is awarded to people who He has prepared for this purpose. The preparation consists mainly of dying to self daily.
No church can grow more than its pastor. And for the pastor to grow, he must start with his self-denial as basic foundation. The death of the flesh occurs after living successive nights of the soul. The road is not easy, it is rather painful. But if we are talking about a sustainable megachurch over the time there is no other alternative but to go through the valley of the shadow of death over and over again.
Death to the flesh leaves man in a state of prostration. And there will be no other choice but to give all glory to God. When you reach that deep understanding is when a man is prepared to lead a megachurch. He will do it with fear and trembling, knowing that he is nothing but dust collected by the hand of God and to whom He breathed the breath of life.
Such absolute dependence on God's grace will be key to persevere in that holy work.

La ventaja principal de plantar una iglesia comenzando con una célula es que todas las personas que conozcan a Jesús a partir de allí, crecerán en un ambiente totalmente celular. Eso implica que los nuevos cristianos serán formados para el liderazgo y tendrán una pasión por la multiplicación celular.
No es necesaria una transición porque las personas nacen ya en un ambiente completamente celular. Requiere mucho menos esfuerzo y tiempo aprender mandarín en China que aprenderlo cuando se es adulto y en occidente. De igual manera, plantar pequeñas iglesias celulares ahorran tiempo y esfuerzo en una tarea que, de otra manera, requerirá tiempo, recursos, poder de convencimiento y un buen presupuesto para tomar café con los directivos.

The advantage of planting a cell church.
The main advantage of planting a church starting with one cell is that all people that come to know Jesus from then on, will grow in a totally cellular environment. That means that the new Christians will be trained for leadership and will have a passion for cell multiplication.
A transition is not necessary since people are already being born in a completely cellular environment. Requires much less time and effort to learn Mandarin in China than to learn it when you are an adult and living in the West. In the same way, planting small cell churches saves time and effort on a task that otherwise, will require time, resources, power of persuasion and a good budget to take coffee with the directors.

LA VISITA DEL PASTOR A LAS CÉLULAS

El pastor de una iglesia celular pequeña tiene la gran oportunidad de involucrarse en el trabajo celular de manera directa. Además de enseñar los valores y principios de su modelo celular, puede visitar cada una de las células de su iglesia.

A small cell church’s pastor has the great opportunity to get directly involve in the cell work. Besides teaching his cell model’s values and principles, he can visit each of his church’s cells.
For the members of his church, their pastor’s visit in the cells shows them the appreciation he has for this work. In addition it teaches them the importance of cells for the Christian life.
In one occasion I heard that Larry Stockstill, from Baton Rouge, visits a cell each week. Obviosly, his church is already so numerous that he will probably not finish visiting them all. And if he does, it will take him several years to complete the cycle. But, how inspiring it is for his members to receive their pastor’s visit in the cells! While the cell church is still small, the pastor has the great advantage to make these so motivating visits to each one of his cells.

A diferencia de otras ‘ventanas’ que se refieren a un espacio geográfico para las misiones, la ventana 4-14 se refiere a un segmento de edad de la población mundial. Estoy hablando de las personas que se encuentran entre los 4 y los 14 años de edad.

Los niños y jóvenes deberían ser uno de los grandes destinatarios del mensaje de salvación. Nos pasamos siempre repitiendo que ellos son el futuro de la iglesia cuando la verdad es que si ellos no son el presente de la iglesia ésta no tendrá futuro.

El 50% de la población mundial se encuentra por debajo de los 25 años de edad y la tercera parte de ellos nunca han escuchado sobre Jesús. ¡Y muchos de ellos en nuestros países occidentales! Como niños, no se les ha brindado la atención debida. Porque, después de todo, solo son niños.

Frecuentemente, los niños han sido un mal necesario que las iglesias han tenido que sobrellevar. Children and youth should be one of the largest addressees of the message of salvation. We always keep on repeating that they are the future of the church, when the truth is that if they are not the present of the church, the church will have no future.

As missões podem ser entendidas através de uma forma horizontal e outra vertical. A missão no sentido horizontal é a expansão territorial do Evangelho. Trata-se de alcançar os lugares inalcançáveis trazendo-lhes a mensagem da salvação. A maioria dos povos não alcançados estão localizados na janela 10/40.
O modelo celular tem provado ser um sistema eficaz de penetração em muitos desses países onde existem restrições severas para a proclamação do Evangelho através dos meios tradicionais. Igrejas em células no mundo livre são veículos de treinamento para aqueles que são chamados para os países de acesso restrito.
No sentido vertical, missão é a extensão do Evangelho, tornando-o mais profundo para os crentes comprometidos. Ao invés de apenas alcançar as pessoas com a boa notícia, as missões verticais ajudam os crentes a tornarem-se fortes discípulos de Cristo que realmente vivem as reivindicações do evangelho.
Há um certo paradoxo entre as missões verticais e as horizontais. Alguns dos países mais "atingidos" no sentido horizontal também são os menos discipulados verticalmente. Por outro lado, aqueles de difícil acesso do Evangelho, por vezes, tem uma caminhada mais profunda, mais comprometida com Jesus.

La misiones pueden comprenderse en un sentido horizontal y otro vertical. La misión en el sentido horizontal es la expansión territorial del evangelio. Se trata de alcanzar a los no alcanzados y llevarles el mensaje de salvación. Es sabido que la mayor parte de pueblos no alcanzados se ubican en la ventana 10/40.
El modelo celular ha demostrado ser un sistema eficiente de penetración en muchos de esos países donde existen severas restricciones al anuncio del evangelio por los medios tradicionales. Las iglesias celulares son, desde esa perspectiva, un campo de entrenamiento para quienes serán llamados a esos países.
En cuanto a las misiones en el sentido vertical, se trata de la extensión del evangelio pero en profundidad. Es pasar de alcanzar a las personas para hacerlos discípulos. Es un esfuerzo para que aquellos que ya escucharon la buenas nuevas, comiencen a vivir de acuerdo a ellas.
En el sentido vertical, puede producirse la paradoja que los países más alcanzados en el sentido horizontal sean los menos evangelizados verticalmente. Y, a la inversa, puede ser que los menos alcanzados horizontalmente sean los que vivan en mayor profundidad el evangelio.
En el sentido vertical, el modelo celular también juega un papel esencial. Es el mejor ambiente para hacer discípulos y para llevar a la práctica la verdad del evangelio. Por tales razones, el modelo celular y las misiones, en su doble aspecto, se encuentran estrechamente relacionadas. Horizontal and vertical missions.

Missions can be understood in a horizontal and in a vertical sence. The mission in the horizontal sence is the territorial expansion of the Gospel. It is about reaching the unreached and bringing them the message of salvation. It is known that most of the unreached groups of people are located in the 10/40 window.

The cell model has proven to be an efficient penetration system in many of those countries where there are severe restrictions on the proclamation of the Gospel by the traditional means. Cell churches are, from that perspective, a training field for those who will be called to those countries.
As for the missions in the vertical sence, it is the extension of the Gospel but in profundity. Is going from reaching the people to make them disciples. It is an effort so that those who have already heard the good news, start living according to them.

In the vertical sence a paradox can be produced: that countries most reached in the horizontal sence be the least evangelized vertically. And, conversely, could be that the least reached horizontally live the Gospel in a greater depth.

A Rede Missionária de Igrejas em Células, é um movimento missionário que nasceu na Asia através da ministração do pastor Ben Wong. A Rede opera com um conceito inovador de como fazer missões. Ela se especializa nos últimos países alcançados , que coincidentemente, são os mais fechados para a palavra o Evangelho.
Precisamente porque estes países não permitem missões tradicionais, nós desenhamos uma estratégia de células para levar o evangelho de casa em casa e de pessoa para pessoa. A experiência de célula é muito valiosa para desenvolver uma nova metodologia missionária. Por esta razão, igrejas que já se trasicionaram para se tornar igrejas em células, associaram-se com outras para enviar líderes que vão plantar a semente do evangelho em lugares não alcançados ao redor do mundo.
Este modelo não precisa de agências missionárias. Trata-se de um contato direto entre a igreja que está enviando e a implantação de novas igrejas nas áreas alvo ( ou ajudar aqueles grupos de crentes que precisam de um mão ajudadora). Portanto não há custos administrativos para cobrir. O apoio financeiro da igreja vai até os missionários que estão no campo.
Em 2005 o primeiro encontro de missionários da america latina da CCMN, ocorreu no Brasil , para o propósito de mexer com o envolvimento de missões nas igrejas da America Latina. No nosso continente , quatro encontros já ocorreram. Os primeiros missionários já foram enviados e estão trabalhando entre as últimas pessoas alcançadas. Este é um método pioneiro, no qual é esperado levar à grandes resultados.

La Red Misionera de Iglesias Celulares (CCMN por sus siglas en inglés) es un movimiento misionero que nació en Asia con la motivación del Pastor Ben Wong. La red trabaja con un concepto innovador de cómo hacer misiones. Se especializa en los países menos alcanzados que, coincidentemente, son los países más cerrados al evangelio.
Precisamente porque las condiciones no permiten las misiones en el sentido tradicional, se echa mano de la estrategia celular para penetrar con el evangelio de persona en persona y de casa en casa. La experiencia celular es muy valiosa para desarrollar esta nueva metodología misionera. Por esa razón, las iglesias que ya son completamente celulares se asocian entre sí para enviar líderes que van a sembrar la semilla del evangelio a esos países.
Este modelo, no necesita de agencias misioneras. Se trata de un contacto directo entre la iglesia que envía y la iglesia que ya está trabajando en esos países. De esa manera, no hay gastos de administración que cubrir. La ayuda económica de la iglesia llega íntegra a los misioneros que se encuentran en el campo.
En 2005 se realizó la primera consulta misionera de CCMN en Brasil con el propósito de involucrar a las iglesias celulares de Latinoamérica en el movimiento. Se han realizado ya cuatro consultas en nuestro continente. Los primeros misioneros han sido ya enviados y se encuentran trabajando entre los pueblos menos alcanzados. Es un método pionero que se espera lleve grandes resultados.

CCMN’s vision.
The Cell Church Missionary Network, is a missionary movement that was born in Asia with the motivation of pastor Ben Wong. The network operates with an innovating concept on how to do missions. It specializes in the least reached countries, which coincidentally, are the most closed to the Gospel.
Precisely because the conditions do not allow the missions in the traditional way, we draw upon cell strategy to penetrate with the Gospel from person to person and from house to house. The cell experience is very valuable to develop this new missionary methodology. For that reason, the churches that are already completely cell churches, associate with each other to send leaders that will plant the seed of the Gospel in those countries.
This model does not need missionary agencies. It is about a direct contact between the church that is sending and the church that is already working in those countries. Thus, there are no administrative expenses to cover. The Church’s whole financial support comes to the missionaries that are in the field.
In 2005 the first missionary consultation of CCMN was held in Brazil, for the purpose of involving Latin America’s cell churches in the movement. In our Continent four consultations have been held already. The first missionaries were already sent and are working among the least reached people. It is a pioneering method which is expected to lead to great results.

Há um grupo de pessoas dos menos atingidos vivendo entre nós. Eles não falam a nossa língua mas podem entendê-la. Comumente eles não recebem a atenção devida nas igrejas e portanto, a proporção da presença deles nas igrejas é sempre menos que sua demografia.
Não é necessário viajar até países distantes e exóticos para alcançá-los. Você não precisa de um orçamento de missões para alcançá-los, até porque, eles vivem em nossas vizinhanças – embora muitas vezes as pessoas tentem escondê-los e privá-los da vida social.
Falo sobre os surdo-mudos. Eles são um dos grupos menos atingidos no planeta. Aproximadamente 5% da população dos países é parte desse grupo. Existem mais de 357 milhões deles no planeta.
Nós temos em nossa igreja o ministério “Rainbow of Love” que trabalha com crianças que têm algum tipo de incapacidade. Além disso, este ministério está treinando novas gerações de lideres em linguagem de sinais. Os resultados têm sido muito bons, desde que os surdo-mudos têm comparecido na igreja por iniciativa própria sabendo que teriam a chance de compreender as músicas e a pregação.
Em breve, vamos poder iniciar nossa primeira célula em linguagem de sinais e alcançar esses esquecidos. Grandes orçamentos não são necessários para se atingir os surdo-mudos. Você só precisa daqueles cristãos incríveis que são apaixonados por missões.

HACIENDO MISIONES EN CASA

Existe un pueblo de los menos alcanzados que viven entre nosotros. No hablan nuestro idioma pero pueden comprender el nuestro. Usualmente no se les da la atención adecuada en las iglesias y por eso la proporción de su presencia en las congregaciones es siempre inferior a su demografía.
Para alcanzarlos no es necesario viajar a países lejanos y exóticos. Tampoco se necesita de un presupuesto para misiones, pues, viven en nuestros vecindarios. Aunque muchas veces tratan de ocultarlos y privarlos de la vida social.
Hablo de los sordomudos. Ellos son el cuarto grupo humano menos alcanzado con el evangelio en el planeta. Aproximadamente el 5% de la población de un país es parte de este grupo humano. Hay más de 357 millones en el planeta.
En nuestra iglesia tenemos el ministerio Arcoiris de Amor que trabaja con niños con algún tipo de discapacidad. Además, entrena a nuevas generaciones de líderes en el lenguaje de señas. Los resultados han sido muy buenos, pues, las personas sordomudas asisten por sí mismas a la iglesia sabiendo que tendrán la oportunidad de comprender los cantos y la predicación.
Pronto nos encontraremos en la capacidad de comenzar nuestras primeras células en lenguaje de señas y alcanzar a los olvidados. No se requiere de grandes presupuestos para alcanzar a los sordomudos. Solamente se necesitan de esos increíbles cristianos apasionados por las misiones.

Making missions at home
There is a people group from the least reached ones living among us. They do not speak our language but can understand it. They don’t usually receive the adequate attention in the churches and therefore the proportion of their presence in the congregations is always less than its demographics.
It is not necessary to travel to distant and exotic countries to reach them. You don´t need a budget for missions either because they live in our neighborhoods. Though people often try to hide them and deprive them of social life.
I’m talking about the deaf-mute people. They are the fourth human group of people less reached with the gospel on the planet. Approximately 5% of a country´s population is part of this human group. There are over 357 million on the planet.
We have in our church the ‘Rainbow of Love’ ministry that works with children that have some kind of disability. In addition, it is training new generations of leaders in sign language. The results have been very good, since the deaf-mute people attend church by themselves knowing that they will have the chance to understand the singing and preaching.
We will soon be able to start our first sign language cells and reach the forgotten ones. Large budgets are not required to reach the deaf-mute people. You only need those incredible Christians that are passionate for missions.

MODELOS CAUTIVANTES PERO ENGAÑOSOS

Cuando una persona decide comprar un vehículo lo selecciona en base a la marca, el diseño, los accesorios, el tipo de vehículo y hasta por su color. Muy pocos lo hacen sobre el criterio de si el vehículo se basa en el principio de la expansión de los gases en combustión que permite echar a andar el motor o no.
Parecido es lo que ocurre con el trabajo celular. Muchos están preocupados por la mecánica de trabajo, la distribución semanal del tiempo, el tipo de reporte, el programa de la célula, etc. Pero no se preguntan por los valores y principios que son los que en verdad hacen andar el modelo.
Esto no significa que los elementos mencionados no tengan valor, son elementos importantes pero que no son la clave esencial del trabajo celular. De igual manera, no se puede decir que los accesorios y el color de un carro no son importantes. Pero, no deberían ser los aspectos decisorios a la hora de una compra.
Es importante ir más allá de lo superficial para llegar al corazón del motor. Es necesario descubrir los valores y principios que siempre son la clave de todo. En palabras de Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: “Lo esencial es invisible a los ojos.”
No sea que por preocuparte excesivamente por copiar un modelo celular, termines enamorándote de un carro sin motor.

Captivating but deceitful models.

What happens with the cell work is similar. Many are worried about the mechanics of work, weekly distribution of time, the type of report, the program of the cell, and so on. But do not ask themeselves about the values and principles which are really the ones that make the model run.
This does not mean that the listed elements are worthless, they are important elements but not the essential key to the cell work. Similarly, we can not say that the accessories and the color of a car are not important. But, they should not be the deciseive issues when it comes to decision making in a purchase.
It is important to go beyond the surface to reach the heart of the engine. It is necessary to discover the values and principles that are always the key to everything. In the words of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: "What is essential is invisible to the eye."
Lest that for worrying excessively about copying a cell model, you end up falling in love with a car that has no engine.

Os valores, princípios e modelos

Em ministério de células, é importante ter conceitos claros sobre o sistema. Tais conceitos são os valores, princípios e modelos. É importante entender cada um desses elementos para saber o que é essencial no ministério de células a fim de concentrar-se mais eficazmente.
Os valores são os elementos mais importantes no ministério de células porque estão relacionados às grandes verdades do Evangelho. Os princípios são aquelas verdades que estão relacionadas à prática da célula, e os valores são as formas que se relacionam com a forma como o trabalho é feito em um local específico.
Os valores são extraídos da palavra de Deus. Os princípios são desenhados a partir das experiências da célula que têm sido acumuladas por cerca de meio século – desde que o movimento moderno de células começou. E, finalmente, os modelos são construídos na medida em que são aplicados os valores e princípios a uma determinada realidade.
Porque os valores são a expressão dos ensinamentos bíblicos, sua aplicação é perpétua e válida para todas as culturas. Os valores são bons em todo o tempo e lugar. Os princípios são aplicáveis universalmente desde que foram definidos como resultado do trabalho que muitas igrejas têm cumprido em várias partes do globo e através das décadas. Los valores son los elementos más importantes del trabajo celular y están relacionados con las grandes verdades del evangelio. Los principios son aquellas verdades que se relación con la práctica del trabajo celular. Los modelos son aquellas formas de trabajo que se relacionan con la manera de hacer el trabajo en un lugar específico.
Los valores se extraen de la Palabra de Dios. Los principios se extraen de la experiencia del trabajo celular que se ha ido acumulando por ya medio siglo desde que comenzó al movimiento celular moderno. Finalmente, los modelos se construyen al aplicar los valores y los principios a la realidad particular.
Dado que los valores son la expresión de las enseñanzas bíblicas, su vigencia es perpetua y valedera para toda cultura. Son buenos en todo tiempo y lugar. Los principios también son de aplicación universal ya que se fueron definiendo como resultado del trabajo que diversas iglesias han realizado en distintos puntos del planeta y a lo largo de varias décadas. The values are extracted from the Word of God. The principles are drawn from the cell work experience that has been accumulating for half a century now since the modern cell movement started. Finally, the models are built by applying the values and principles to the particular reality.
Because the values are the expression of biblical teachings, their applicability is perpetual and valid for all cultures. They are good at all times and places. The principles are universally applicable since they were defined as a result of the work that many churches have fulfilled in various parts of the globe and throughout decades. The ones that are not valid in every place and time are the models. They respond to the unique characteristics of each church’s time and place. Therefore, the main effort should be placed in living the cell work’s values and principles.

Princípios do trabalho em células

Como eu citei anteriormente, princípios são as verdades que refletem na prática do ministério de células. Você não encontra princípios escritos na Bíblia. Aliás, princípios são formulados conforme as igrejas em célula aplicam os valores bíblicos em seus próprios contextos.
Os princípios são a soma total do grande união de reflexão e concentração de sabedoria. Abaixo seguem alguns princípios que eu venho coletando de alguns homens de Deus.
Vamos começar com dois princípios ditos pelo Pastor David Cho:  “Para ter sucesso você precisa falhar três vezes.”  "Se as metas para os líderes não estão definidas eles só se encontram para conviver."
Aqui está outro princípio, de Randall Neighbout:  “Multiplicação é o sinal visível de discipulado e saúde emocional.”
Eu também tenho alguns princípios que ouvi de Joel Comiskey:  “Tenha apenas um trilho de treinamento, mas tenha vários métodos de treinamento.”  “O trilho de treinamento é a chave da multiplicação.”  “O modelo deve ser ajustado todo tempo.”
Vamos observar outro princípio, de Robert Lay:  “Células só se multiplicam quando os líderes se multiplicam.”
E como aprendiz, eu sugiro os seguintes:  “No trabalho em células não se trata de dispensar alguém, mas, ao invés disso, compensar suas deficiências.”  “Os alvos das pequenas igrejas são maiores que em numerosas igrejas.”
Há outros princípios também.  O que dá valor a esses princípios é que eles podem se aplicar em cada igreja e não são limitados pelo contexto ou cultura. Eles podem ajudar as igrejas a construírem seus modelos únicos.

Como lo expliqué anteriormente, los principios son aquellas verdades que se relacionan con la práctica del trabajo celular. Los principios no se encuentran escritos en la Biblia pero han sido formulados sobre la base de la experiencia de la iglesia celular aplicando los valores bíblicos a sus contextos propios.

Los principios son enunciados a manera de aforismos y encierran mucha reflexión y sabiduría concentrada. Para extraer toda su riqueza es importante reflexionar detenidamente en cada uno de ellos. A continuación presento algunos principios que he ido coleccionando de diversos hombres de Dios.

Comencemos con un par de principios enunciados por el Pastor David Cho: “Para triunfar tienes que fallar tres veces.” “Si no se establecen metas para los líderes solamente se reúnen para convivir.”

Acá hay otro principio de Randall Neighbour: “La multiplicación es el signo visible del discipulado y la salud espiritual.”

También tengo principios que le he escuchado a Joel Comiskey: “Una sola ruta del líder pero muchas maneras para impartirla.” “La ruta del líder es la clave para la multiplicación.” “El modelo se debe ajustar todo el tiempo.”

Veamos ahora otro principio de Roberto Lay: “Las células se multiplican solamente cuando se multiplican los líderes.”

Y como un aprendiz, sugiero los siguientes: “En el trabajo celular no se trata de desechar a nadie sino de suplir sus deficiencias.” “Las metas en las iglesias pequeñas son mayores que en las iglesias numerosas.”

Existen otros principios más. Lo valioso de ellos es que su aplicación para la construcción del modelo propio de cada iglesia es clave para ser exitoso.

Cell work principles.

As I explained it before, principles are those truths that relate to the cell work practice. You don’t find principles written in the Bible but these have been formulated on the basis of the cell church experience applying the biblical values to their own contexts.
The principles are enunciations by way of aphorisms and enclose a great deal of reflection and concentrated wisdom. It is important to reflect carefully on each one of them to extract all of its richness. The following are some principles I've been collecting from various men of God.
Let's start with a couple of principles enunciated by Pastor David Cho: "To succeed you must fail three times." "If goals for the leaders are not set they only meet to cohabitate."

Here is another principle from Randall Neighbour: "Multiplication is the visible sign of discipleship and spiritual health."
I also have principles that I have heard from Joel Comiskey: "A single leader’s route but many ways to impart it." "The leader’s route is the key to multiplication." "The model should be adjusted at all time."
Let’s see now another principle from Roberto Lay: "Cells multiply only when leaders multiply."
And as an apprentice, I suggest the following ones: "In the cell work it is not about dismissing anyone but instead about making up for their deficiencies." "The goals in small churches are greater than in numerous churches."
There are some other principles. What is valuable about them is that their application for the construction of every church´s own model is key to being successful.

Faça mudanças no seu modelo sem mudar o modelo.

Roberto Lay (Brasil) gosta de dizer, "o melhor modelo é o que funciona para você". Depois de ter determinado qual é o melhor modelo pra você, existem duas coisas que deve manter em mente.  A primeira coisa é manter esse modelo simples. Nós temos repetido nesse blog muitas vezes que não existe uma fórmula mágica. A chave é aplicar os valores e princípios no seu contexto. Aqueles que adotam o "mais recente modelo" são comumente enganados sobre o fato de ter uma fórmula mágica para o sucesso. Pular de modelo em modelo vai prejudicar a igreja porque os membros se sentirão confusos e sem direção.  Geralmente, quando o pastor faz um pronunciamento sobre uma mudança de modelo, nada vai realmente acontecer. Os membros vão se sentir desconfortáveis e desencorajados. O resultado é que eles não vão querer aprender sobre o ministério de células no futuro.   A segunda coisa que você deve manter em mente é que você sempre pode improvisar no modelo. Um modelo não deve nunca ser uma rocha imóvel. Modelos são criações humanas e por isso, não são perfeitos. Há sempre espaço para improvisações e eles devem ser ajustados continuamente. Quando me refiro a ajustamentos, quero dizer adaptar seu sistema de célula, não mudar de modelo.  É importante relatar isso para o restante da Igreja em Células para que recebam encorajamento e estímulo. Make Changes to Your Model without Changing the Model

Robert Lay (Brazil) likes to say, “the best model is the one that works for you.” After you have determined what is the best model for you, there are two things to keep in mind.
The first thing is to keep you model simple. We have repeated on this blog over and over that there is no magical formula. The key is to apply the values and principles to your context. Those that jump on the most recent cell “model” are often misguided into thinking there is a magical formula to success. Jumping on one model to the next will damage the church because the members will feel confused and directionless.
Often when the pastor gives an announcement about a model change, nothing will actually happen. The members will then feel uncomfortable and discouraged. The result is they won’t want to learn about cell ministry in the future.
The second thing that you’ll want to keep in mind is that you can always improve on the model. A model should never be an immovable rock. Models are human creations and because of this, they are not perfect. There’s always room for improvement and must be adjusted continually. When referring to adjustments, I’m referring to tweaking your cell system, rather than changing from model to model.
It’s important to relate to the rest of the cell Church world in order to receive mutual encouragement and stimulation. As you learn from others, you will make small adjustments and be able to polish your model. In this way, your model will maintain fresh and up-to-date. Don’t change anything that already functions well, but if you think something can be improvement, by all means make those changes!

HAZ CAMBIOS A TU MODELO SIN CAMBIAR DE MODELO

Roberto Lay, de Brasil, suele decir: “El mejor modelo celular es el que funcione para ti.” Una vez hayas definido las características del modelo que funcione para ti hay dos cosas que debes tener en cuenta.
La primera, es que debes conservar tu modelo básico sin cambiarlo. Se ha explicado ampliamente ya que los modelos no son en ninguna manera una fórmula mágica. Lo que verdaderamente es decisivo es la aplicación sincera de los valores y de los principios. Por tanto, aquellos que saltan de un modelo celular a otro, y luego a otro, lo hacen porque piensan encontrar una clave mágica para el éxito. Pero saltar de un modelo a otro es dañino para la congregación ya que las personas se sienten confundidas, perplejas y sin un rumbo definido.
Después de un tiempo de haber anunciado con grandeza un cambio de modelo, lo cierto es que nada ocurrirá. Entonces las personas se sentirán desalentadas y probablemente no deseen saber nada más acerca de las células.
La segunda cosa que debes saber es que todo modelo se puede mejorar. Los modelos no deben ser rocas inamovibles. Los modelos son creaciones humanas y por lo tanto no son perfectos, pero sí pueden ser mejorados. Por ello es que todo modelo se debe estar ajustando siempre que sea necesario. Al hablar de ajustes nos referimos a pequeños elementos que sirven para corregir el rumbo del barco, pero no para cambiar de barco.
Al relacionarnos con el resto del Cuerpo de Cristo que trabaja con células, nuestra visión se enriquecerá por medio de nuestra experiencia mutua. Se pueden adoptar ciertos énfasis y matices que no constituyen ningún cambio de modelo, pero sí ajustes pequeños que van puliendo nuestros modelos para que vayan ajustándose a las nuevas épocas y a los nuevos desafíos. De esta manera, nuestro modelo siempre se conservará fresco y actualizado. Si lo que haces funciona para ti, sigue haciéndolo. No se debe cambiar ni ajustar lo que funciona muy bien. Pero si consideras que puedes hacer un ajuste para mejorar las cosas, adelante, trabaja en ello.

Onde as células deveriam se encontrar

Eu concordo com Joel Comiskey que o grupo de célula pode se encontrar em qualquer lugar com a exceção do prédio da igreja. A decisão de onde se encontrar depende amplamente das necessidades dos membros da célula. Em El Salvador, o Movimento Cristão Universitário evangeliza estudantes universitários em todas as partes do país. Este movimento se foca em grupos de células e utiliza as salas de aula do campus, gramados, cafeterias ou qualquer lugar que eles encontrem para fazerem seus grupos de células. Alguns dos membros deste movimento também fazem parte da Elim Church e trazem à igreja uma profunda experiência em ministério de células o que tem sido de grande ajuda às nossas próprias células.
Mesmo que haja uma grande variedade de lugares para reunião de célula, nós da Elim nos concentramos apenas nas reuniões nos lares. No começo, nosso alvo era alcançar as famílias de El Salvador. De fato, no princípio chamávamos nossas células de “Grupos Familiares”.Fizemos isso porque, em espanhol, o primeiro livro de David Cho foi intitulado, “Grupos Familiares e o crescimento da Igreja”. Where Cells Should Meet?

I agree with Joel Comiskey that a cell group can meet anywhere with the exception of the church building. The decision of where to meet depends largely on the needs of the cell members. In El Salvador, the Christian University Movement evangelizes university students throughout the country. This movement focuses on cell groups and utilizes campus classrooms, lawns, cafeterias or anywhere they can find a meeting place for their cell groups. Some of the members of this movement are also part of the Elim Church and bring to the church a in-depth experience in cell ministry and have been a great help to our own cells.
Even though there is a wide variety of cell meeting places, we in Elim focus solely on meeting in the home. From the beginning, our goal was to win the families of El Salvador. In fact, in the beginning we called our cells “Family Groups.” We did this because in Spanish, David Cho’s first book was titled, “Family Groups and the Growth of the Church.” Our goal from the beginning was to reach families with the gospel of Jesus Christ, and so we focused on starting cells in homes.
Today, after so many years of cell ministry, we continue opening cell groups in the homes. We don’t have cell groups in other places, nor do we encourage them. Even though this is our practice at Elim, I believe that if a cell group meets at the same place (even if it’s not a home), it can still fulfill the key values of evangelism, community, and edification. These are the key values that make or break a cell group–not where it meets.
One of the difficulties we face in meeting in places outside the home is that it makes the supervisory work more difficult. For example, it would make it more difficult for a supervisor to visit a university or secular place of employment. At the same time, this is a problem that some cell churches have overcome. Please feel free to share your experiences.

CÉLULAS EN LAS CASAS Y FUERA DE LAS CASAS

Estoy de acuerdo con Joel Comiskey que una célula puede realizarse en cualquier lugar siempre y cuando sea fuera del edificio de la iglesia. Lo cual, depende mucho de las necesidades de los miembros de esa célula. En El Salvador existe el Movimiento Universitario Cristiano (MUC) que realiza un trabajo de evangelización en las universidades de nuestro país. Ellos se reúnen siguiendo el patrón de las células y, de esa manera, penetran las universidades reuniéndose en los campus de cada una de ellas. Eso les facilita el reunir a los estudiantes sin mayores dificultades.
Algunos de los miembros del MUC son miembros de nuestras iglesias y poseen mucha experiencia en el trabajo celular. Ellos resultan ser muy buenos como líderes dentro del MUC.
Sin embargo, en Elim, todas nuestras células las realizamos en las casas. Desde el principio uno de los objetivos fue el de ganar el grupo familiar. De hecho, al principio nuestras células se llamaron ‘Grupos Familiares’. La razón de ello fue porque así tradujeron al español el titulo de uno de los libros del Pastor Cho: ‘Los Grupos Familiares y el Crecimiento de la Iglesia.’ En razón de ese libro fue que nuestro enfoque se colocó en alcanzar a las familias, lo cual, nos condujo a ubicar las células en las casas únicamente.
Hoy, después de todos estos años, el trabajo se continúa realizando solamente en las casas. No tenemos células ni animamos a que se abran en lugares que no sean las casas. Esa es nuestra manera como lo hacemos en Elim. Pero, creo que si una célula se reúne constantemente en otro lugar que no sea una casa, puede alcanzar los valores de la evangelización, la comunión y la edificación. En realidad, esos son los componentes que convierten a un grupo pequeño en una célula.
Una de las dificultades que vemos en salir de las casas es que la labor del supervisor se dificultaría. Por ejemplo, sería difícil tener un supervisor para una o varias células que se reunieran en una escuela o en una universidad en horas de trabajo. Pero de seguro, este es un problema que algunas iglesias ya habrán resuelto. ¿Por qué no comparten aquí sus experiencias?

TRABAJANDO CON CÉLULAS ROTATIVAS Y PERMANENTES

Las células rotativas son aquellas que pasan de una casa a otra cambiando de anfitrión cada semana, en tanto que las células permanentes son aquellas que se mantienen en la casa del mismo anfitrión todas las semanas.
En nuestro trabajo en iglesia Elim realizamos los dos tipos de reuniones y las dos han sido de bendición. Las células rotativas tienen la virtud de alcanzar nuevos círculos de influencia cada vez que pasan de una casa a otra. El hecho que la célula es novedad en un hogar se convierte en un elemento de atracción para los vecinos.
Por su parte, las células permanentes, aunque conservan su círculo de influencia sin variar, tienen la virtud de convertirse en una constante cada semana. Las personas pueden tener un trabajo de seguimiento más extenso y muchas oportunidades de asistir a una célula cercana.
Utilizamos las células rotativas con aquellos anfitriones que desean tener una célula pero que todavía no han experimentado el nuevo nacimiento. Con el fin de no ser excluyentes, se les comunica que se realizarán en su hogar algunas reuniones. Esa célula es de carácter rotativo pues solamente estará en ese hogar un poco de tiempo. Luego pasará a casa de otro anfitrión. Esto siempre es así a menos que en ese tiempo el anfitrión experimente el nuevo nacimiento. En ese caso, la célula pasa de ser rotativa a permanente.
De esa manera es como combinamos el trabajo con ambos tipos de células de manera muy provechosa.

Working with rotating and permanent cells.
Rotating cells are those that move from one house to another changing host each week, while the permanent cells are those that remain in the same host’s house every week.
In our work at Elim Church we perform the two types of meetings and the two have been a blessing. Rotating cells have the virtue to reach new spheres of influence each time they move from one house to another. The fact that the cell is a novelty in a home becomes an element of attraction for the neighbors.
On the other hand, permanent cells, even though they maintain their sphere of influence without any variation, they have the virtue of becoming a constant each week. People can have a more extensive follow-up work and many opportunities to attend a cell nearby.
Rotating cells are used with those hosts who have not yet experienced the new birth but wish to have a cell. In order not to be exclusive, they are informed that some meetings will be held in their homes. That cell is a rotating cell because it is going to be in that home for a short while. Then it will move to another host's house. This is always like this unless the host experiences the new birth during that time. In that case, the cell goes from been a rotating cell to a permanent one.
In that way is how we combine the work with both types of cells more usefully.

Paixão e persistência, chaves para anfitriões.

Ser um anfitrião de célula não é fácil. Envolve manter a casa aberta uma vez por semana para receber pessoas com suporte permanente. Receber as pessoas requer uma profunda compaixão com o perdido.   Hortênsia foi uma das primeiras anfitriãs que tivemos, no início do trabalho em células. Ela hospedou uma das primeiras células em Elim. Ela abriu as portas de sua casa para receber convidados por muitos anos. Não demorou muito para que novas células se multiplicassem a partir da que se reunia em sua casa e encheram a área próxima. Se por algum motivo Hortência não estava em casa, ela deixava sua irmã encarregada de receber a célula, para que esta ocorresse.   Em uma ocasião, após receber a célula por mais de dez anos, eu pensei que era o momento certo para pedir a Hortência que fizesse uma pausa, após tanto tempo de serviço fiel. Então eu instrui seu líder a mover a célula que acontecia em sua casa para um novo loca, o que ele fez prontamente.   Alguns dias depois, Hortência pediu para falar comigo. Quando estávamos em meu escritório, ela caiu em lágrimas e me perguntou em que área estava pecando. Eu respondi que eu não sabia de nenhum pecado de sua vida. Então ela me perguntou por que eu havia removido a célula de sua casa. Eu expliquei que ela já tinha servido ao Senhor como anfitriã por mais de uma década, e que eu pensei que ela precisasse de um merecido descanso. Ainda em meio a lágrimas ela me pediu que não fizesse isso. Disse-me que não era um sacrifício abrir as portas de sua casa para receber um grupo de célula, e que era seu sincero desejo continuar fazendo isso.   Envergonhado, eu pedi perdão a ela e prometi que a célula continuaria a se encontrar em sua casa. Agora já faz mais de vinte e cinco anos desde que Hortência abriu as portas de sua casa para um grupo de célula pela primeira vez. Um total de 135 células foi originado da célula em sua casa. Muitas pessoas vieram a reconhecer Jesus como Senhor e Salvador através da casa da Hortência, e ela continua servindo o Senhor como anfitriã.   Joel Comiskey fez um grande trabalho resumindo em duas palavras as características do Ministério de Células de Elim: paixão e persistência. LA PASIÓN Y LA PERSISTENCIA COMO CLAVE PARA LOS ANFITRIONES

Ser un anfitrión de célula no es algo fácil. Ser anfitrión supone conservar la casa abierta una vez por semana para recibir a personas de manera permanente. Se necesita tener una gran compasión por los pedidos para no decaer en esa función.
Hortensia fue una de las primeras anfitrionas que tuvimos al iniciar nuestro trabajo celular. En su casa se abrió una de las 9 células con que comenzamos. Por muchos años ella abrió las puertas de su casa para recibir a los invitados. Pronto la célula de su casa comenzó a multiplicarse y las nuevas células se ubicaron en casas de nuevos anfitriones en su vecindario.
Cuando por alguna razón Hortensia no estaba en casa, dejaba a su hermana como encargada para que la reunión de célula siempre se realizara.
En una ocasión y después de más de 10 años de trabajo, pensé que era el momento de dejar descansar a Hortensia después de tanto tiempo de fiel servicio. Así que instruí al supervisor responsable para que trasladara esa célula a casa de un nuevo anfitrión, lo cual, hizo prontamente.
A los pocos días Hortensia me pidió hablar conmigo. Cuando estuvimos en mi oficina de la iglesia se echó a llorar y a preguntarme en qué había pecado. Yo le respondí que yo no estaba enterado de si había pecado. Ella entonces me preguntó que entonces por qué le retiraba la célula de su casa.
Le expliqué que ya había servido por más de una década al Señor como anfitriona y que yo había pensado que ella necesita un merecido descanso. Pero llorando abundantemente me pidió que no hiciera eso. Que para ella no era de ninguna manera molesto abrir las puertas de su casa para la célula y que deseaba seguir haciéndolo.
Apenado, le pedí disculpas y le prometí que la célula volvería a su hogar. Lo cual, sucedió. Ahora, han transcurrido ya 25 años desde que Hortensia abrió las puertas de su casa. Un total de 135 células se han originado de la célula en su hogar. Muchas personas han conocido al salvador Jesús en casa de Hortensia y ella sigue sirviendo al Señor como anfitriona.

Passion and persistence, key to hosts
Being a cell host is not easy. Being a host involves keeping the house open once a week to receive people on a permanent basis. You need to have great compassion for the lost to avoid declining in this function.

I explained that she had already serve the Lord as a hostess for over a decade and that I had thought she needed a well earned rest. But weeping abundantly she asked me not to do that. That to her it was not a bother at all to open the doors of her house for the cell and that it was her desire to keep on doing it.
Embarrassed I apologized to her and promised that the cell would return to her house. Which happened. 25 years have passed by since Hortensia opened the doors of her house. A total of 135 cells have originated from the cell in her home. Many people have known Jesus the savior in Hortensia’s house and she keeps on serving the Lord as a hostess.
Joel Comiskey did a great job summarizing in two words Elim church’s work: passion and persistence. I believe that if it is not passion and persistence what Hortensia has, then ...What is it?

O Circulo de influência do Anfitrião.

O anfitrião tem uma vantagem sobre outros membros da célula porque ele/ela é a dona da casa. Isto é muito importante para os convidados. É diferente quando eu convido alguém para vir à minha casa do que quando eu convido para vir à casa de outra pessoa.
O anfitrião é o único que pode dizer aos seus amigos: “ Eu gostaria de convidá-lo para uma reunião na minha casa”. Todos os outros terão que dizer: “Eu gostaria de convidá-lo para uma reunião na casa de uma pessoa que eu conheço.”
Esta é a razão da qual o anfitrião tem de tirar vantagem da oportunidade e ganhar seu círculo de influência. O papel do anfitrião é vital para a multiplicação da célula. De fato, todos os outros membros da célula em algum momento terão de depender da atitude do anfitrião para ganhar seus amigos para Jesus.
O membro da célula deverá ser considerar o anfitrião desde que o bom andamento da célula dependa da grande dedicação das boas maneiras do anfitrião. Isto não deverá anular as responsabilidades de cada membro da célula para com sua multiplicação, mas também não devemos esquecer do papel do anfitrião.  No conhecimento das diversas mas complementares funções de cada membro da célula, repousa a chave da multiplicação.

EL CÍRCULO DE INFLUENCIA DEL ANFITRIÓN

El anfitrión disfruta de una ventaja sobre todos los demás miembros de la célula y es que se trata del propietario de la casa donde se realizan las reuniones. Ante los invitados, eso es muy importante. No es lo mismo que yo invite a un amigo a ir a mi casa que invitarlo a ir a la casa de alguien que él no conoce.
Solamente el anfitrión es el que puede decir a sus amigos: ‘Te invito a una reunión en mi casa’. Todos los demás tendrán que decir: ‘Te invito a una reunión en casa de alguien que yo conozco.’
Por esa razón, el anfitrión debe aprovechar esa ventaja y ganar a su círculo de influencia. El papel del anfitrión es vital para la multiplicación celular. En realidad todos los demás miembros de la célula tendrán que depender de la actitud del anfitrión para ganar a sus propias amistades para Jesús.
Los miembros de la célula deben ser considerados con el anfitrión ya que el bienestar de la célula dependerá en buena medida del bienestar del anfitrión. Esto no debe anular la responsabilidad de cada miembro en la multiplicación celular, pero tampoco se debe desvalorizar el papel clave del anfitrión. En el reconocimiento de la función diversa pero complementaria de cada miembro se encuentra la clave para la multiplicación.

The host’s circle of influence
The host has an advantage over all other members of the cell which is that he is the owner of the house where the meetings are held. This is very important to the guests. It is not the same to invite a friend to come over my house than to invite him to someone elses house who he does not know.
The host is the only one who can say to his friends: “I want to invite you to a meeting at my house”. Everyone else will have to say: “I want to invite you to a meeting in the house of someone I know”.
It is for this reason that the host has to take advantage of that leverage and win his circle of influence. The host’s role is vital for cell multiplication. In fact all the other cell members will have to depend on the host’s attitude to win their own friends for Jesus.
The cell members should be considerate to the host since the cell’s wellfare will depend largelly on the host’s well-being. This should not nullify each member’s responsibility with cell multiplication, but neither should we underrate the host’s key role. In the acknowledgment of the diverse but complementary function of each member lies the key to multiplication.

HONOR Y VERGUENZA EN EL SIGLO PRIMERO.

Las ciencias sociales han aportado importantes elementos en la comprensión de las Escrituras. Ahora se sabe que un aspecto fundamental de las relaciones sociales entre los primeros cristianos era los conceptos de honor y vergüenza. Las sociedades mediterráneas consideraban el honor como una virtud que se debía procurar por todos los medios.
Un elemento muy importante en la adquisición y conservación del honor era la hospitalidad. Se consideraba una gran vergüenza el no mostrarse hospitalario con las personas. Por el contrario, el ser hospedador contribuía a incrementar el honor de la persona. Mientras mayores fueran las atenciones al huésped o mayor el número de huéspedes que se recibían, mayor honor atribuido.
Por ese motivo fue que la hospitalidad se convirtió en una virtud muy apreciada por los primeros cristianos y esa es la razón por la que se hacen múltiples menciones del tema en el Nuevo Testamento.
Aunque hoy en día las relaciones de honor y vergüenza no son tan rígidas como en la antigüedad, todavía sigue siendo verdad que la hospitalidad se considera una muestra de cortesía. Una razón importante que debería animar a los cristianos a mostrar su hospitalidad como anfitriones de células. Que no es la única forma de hospitalidad, pero sí una muy importante.

Honor and shame in the first century.
The social sciences have contributed with important elements in the understanding of Scriptures. We now know that a fundamental aspect of social relations among the early Christians were the concepts of honor and shame. Honor was considered by Mediterranean societies as a virtue to be sought by all means.
Hospitality was a very important element in the acquisition and preservation of honor. It was considered of great shame not to show hospitality to the people. On the contrary, to be hospitable contributed to increase the person’s honor. The greater the attentions toward the guest, or the greater the number of guests received, the greater the honor conferred.
That was the reason why hospitality became a virtue highly appreciated by the early Christians and that is the reason why multiple mentions of the topic are made in the New Testament.
Although today the relationships of honor and shame are not as rigid as in ancient times, it still remains true that hospitality is considered a sign of courtesy. It is a very important reason that should encourage Christians to show their hospitality as cells hosts, which it is not the only form of hospitality, but an important one indeed.

Las lecciones que se imparten en las células de Elim contienen una enseñanza tomada directamente de la Palabra de Dios. Los estudios están basados en un libro del Nuevo Testamento. Por ejemplo, puede ser el evangelio de Juan. En cada semana de reunión se toma una parte de ese evangelio y se hace una exposición de sus enseñanzas con un énfasis evangelizador.
La siguiente semana, se continúa con los versículos que siguen. De esa manera, se va desarrollando un estudio versículo a versículo de ese evangelio hasta completarlo. En un libro tan extenso como el evangelio de Juan las enseñanzas pueden tomar de tres a cuatro trimestres. Otros libros del Nuevo Testamento que son más cortos se pueden impartir en un solo trimestre.

The Bible teaching in the cell.
The lessons taught at Elim cells contain a teaching taken directly from the Word of God. The studies are based on a book of the New Testament. For example, it may be the Gospel of John. A part of the Gospel is taken each week in the meeting and an exposition of its teachings is done with an emphasis on evangelization.
On the following week, we continue with the verses that come next. In that way, we develop a verse by verse study of the Gospel to its completion. In a book as large as the Gospel of John, teachings can take three to four quarters. Other New Testament books that are shorter can be imparted in a single quarter.
Among other things, people attend the cell because they have an interest in knowing the previous week’s continuance of the study. Thus, the teaching of the Bible occupies a prominent place. In terms of time, most of the meeting is dedicated to the teaching of the Bible.
The teaching of the Word of God becomes under those conditions the attractive element around which revolves the cell guests’ interest.

Para que una lección de célula sea eficiente, es necesario definir cuál es el público que se desea alcanzar con ella y cuáles los contenidos que se desean compartir. En el caso de iglesia Elim, la lecciones de células van dirigidas a los invitados y su propósito es eminentemente evangelizador.
Dado que la lección no es para los creyentes y tampoco para su maduración espiritual, la presentación de la enseñanza se vuelve sencilla y no tiene más objeto que presentar a Jesús como salvador.
Toda lección ofrece una lectura bíblica inicial. Luego se detalla la Verdad Central. Este es un elemento fundamental pues acá se presenta en una o dos frases la esencia de la enseñanza del día. Luego, viene el desarrollo de la lección propiamente dicha que sigue los tres elementos básicos de una enseñanza:
• Introducción.
• Cuerpo.
• Aplicación.
Las lecciones se ofrecen de manera impresa en forma de folleto e incluyen las enseñanzas para el trimestre. De esa manera, el líder tiene de antemano todas la enseñanzas. Al final de cada uno de esos folletos, se presenta un glosario de las palabras que pudiesen presentar algún grado de dificultad para el líder. De esta manera se trata de facilitar y hacer eficiente la enseñanza de la célula.

The lessons of Elim church’s cells
For a cell lesson to be efficient, you must define the public you want to reach with it and the content you want to share. In the case of Elim Church, the cell lessons are directed to the guests and their purpose is eminently for evangelizing.
Since the lesson is not for believers and either for their spiritual maturity, the presentation of the teaching becomes simple and has no other purpose than to present Jesus as savior.
Every lesson offers an initial reading of the Bible. Then, the Central Truth is displayed with detail. This is a key element since in one or two sentences the essence of that day’s teaching is presented here. Then, the development of the lesson itself comes, which follows the three basic elements of a teaching:
• Introduction.
• Text (or Body).
• Implementation.
The lessons are available in print in a booklet form and include the lessons for the quarter. Thus, the leader has all the lessons beforehand. At the end of each of those booklets, a glossary of words that might display some kind of difficulty for the leader is presented. This is how we try to facilitate and make the cell´s teaching efficient.
In his book, “Passion and Persistence”, Joel Comiskey presents a model of our lessons. The book is published in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Mandarin.

LA EVANGELIZACIÓN Y LA EDIFICACIÓN EN UNA IGLESIA CELULAR

A pesar que en iglesia Elim nuestras lecciones son evangelizadoras, es inevitable que al mismo tiempo sean edificadoras para los creyentes. No es posible presentar a Jesús como salvador sin pasar por las enseñanzas de las Escrituras. Especialmente cuando las lecciones consisten en estudios sistemáticos de libros enteros del Nuevo Testamento que van desarrollándose versículo a versículo.
Aunque no es nuestra meta básica alcanzar la madurez de los creyentes en la célula, de alguna manera, ellos se edifican por ejercer la función de enseñanza o por escuchar la exposición del evangelio.
¿Adónde se produce entonces la maduración de los cristianos en Elim? La respuesta es: en las celebraciones. Pero, es importante aclara que los miembros de Elim asisten a la celebración tres veces por semana. Sé que para otros países esto puede parecer excesivo. Pero así es el calor del latino en su vida cristiana. Por supuesto, comprendo que las cosas son diferentes en otras culturas. Incluso, son diferentes en nuestras propias iglesias filiales fuera de El Salvador.
Existe entonces un balance entre el esfuerzo evangelizador en las células y la edificación en la celebración. La madurez obtenida en la celebración le permite a nuestros miembros ir a ejercer una evangelización eficaz en las células. Y el trabajo en las células desarrolla en ellos necesidades que buscan satisfacer en la celebración. Así, es como vuela esta iglesia de dos alas.

Evangelism and the edification in a cell church.
Although our lessons in Elim church are evangelizing, it is inevitable for them to be at the same time edifying to the believers. It is not possible to present Jesus as Savior without going through the teachings of the Scriptures. Especially when the lessons consist of systematic studies of whole books of the New Testament that are developed verse by verse.
Eventhough it is not our primary goal to see that believers reach maturity in the cell, somehow, they are edified by exerting the function of teaching or by listening to the exposition of the Gospel.
Where then is the maturation of Elim’s Christians produced? The answer is: in the celebrations. But it is important to make clear that Elim members attend the celebrations three times a week. I know that for other countries this might seem excessive. But this how the Latino’s warmth is when it comes to his Christian life. Of course, I understand that things are different in other cultures. They are different even in our own branch churches outside of El Salvador.
Then, there is a balance between the evangelization work in the cells and the edification in the celebration. The maturity gained in the celebration allows our members to exert an efficient evangelization in the cells. And the cell work develops in them needs they seek to meet in the celebration. Thus, this is how this two wings church flies.

LA MULTIPLICACIÓN CELULAR Y LA GRAN COMISIÓN.

Jesús entregó a su iglesia la Gran Comisión de ir por todo el mundo y predicar el evangelio a toda criatura. Desde entonces, la iglesia de todos los tiempos se ha esforzado por llevar la buena noticia de salvación a todo lugar.
La evangelización a través de las células en los hogares es una estrategia para el cumplimiento de la Gran Comisión. Consecuentemente, el trabajo celular procura ser expansivo. La multiplicación es la clave para la penetración evangelizadora en las comunidades.
En la actualidad, casi la mitad de la población mundial vive en grandes ciudades. Y esa es una tendencia que continúa creciendo. La iglesia cuenta con una excelente herramienta de penetración para las grandes ciudades en el trabajo celular. Pero la estrategia solamente será de penetración cuando la multiplicación sea la meta de cada célula. Si la célula se encierra en sí misma para la comunión o el discipulado exclusivamente, perderá su poder de penetración y de expansión. La célula perderá vitalidad porque se olvidará del mundo perdido en tanto que se ocupa de los intereses de los que ya son cristianos.
Pero, si la célula mantiene como su meta la multiplicación, se mantendrá abierta para recibir a los necesitados y pasará de casa en casa hasta lograr permear significativamente con el evangelio a las ciudades. Las células deben multiplicarse porque tenemos una Gran Comisión que sigue siendo una tarea pendiente.

Cell multiplication and the Great Commission.
Jesus handed in his church the Great Commission to go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature. Since then, the church of all times has sought to bring the good news of salvation to all places.

Evangelization through home cells is a strategy for fulfilling the Great Commission. Consequently, the cell work seeks to be expansive. Multiplication is the key to evangelistic penetration in the communities.

Today, almost half of the world’s population lives in large cities. And that's a trend that continues to grow. The church has in the cell work an excellent penetration tool for large cities. But the strategy will be of penetration only when multiplication becomes the goal of every cell. If the cell is enclosed in itself for fellowship or discipleship only, it will lose its penetration and expansion power. The cell will lose vitality because it will forget the lost world while dealing with the interests of those who are already Christians.

But if the cell maintains the multiplication as its goal, it will remain open to receive those in need and it will go from house to house until it significantly succeeds in permeating the cities with the gospel. The cells must be multiplied because we have a Great Commission that still remains as a pending task.

LA MULTIPLICACIÓN DE LÍDERES Y DE CÉLULAS.

La forma usual de multiplicación celular en Elim es la de madre a hija. De una célula madura (madre) se produce una multiplicación para dar paso a una nueva célula (hija) con un nuevo líder y parte del núcleo de la célula madre.
Nuestra norma es que cada líder debe tener bajo su responsabilidad una sola célula y cada célula debe reconocer a su respectivo líder. Desde esa premisa, ninguna nueva célula puede llegar a existir sin tener un líder designado. Por ese motivo, nuestro énfasis se encuentra en la multiplicación de los líderes antes que en la multiplicación celular. Nuestra concentración es en la multiplicación de los líderes, la multiplicación celular vendrá por añadidura.
Otro ministerios lo han expresado en los siguientes términos: las células no se multiplican, son los líderes los que se multiplican. Esta forma de decir las cosas es muy absolutista. No obstante, transmite una verdad. Es la verdad de la importancia que tiene la multiplicación de líderes para que las células, a su vez, se multipliquen.
Estas son las mismas razones por las que en nuestros controles estadísticos no se registra en ningún lugar el número de células. Solamente cuenta la cantidad de líderes. Otros datos que recogemos son la asistencia, las conversiones, los bautismos en agua.
La Ruta del Líder es fundamental para lograr la multiplicación de líderes y el trabajo de los mentores es vital para consolidar a los cristianos como nuevos líderes. Esas son las claves para la multiplicación celular.

Leaders and cells multiplication.

The usual form of cell multiplication in Elim is of mother to daughter. From a mature cell (mother) there is a multiplication to make way for a new cell (daughter) with a new leader and part of the mother’s cell core.

Our norm is that every leader must have under his responsibility, one single cell and each cell must recognize their respective leader. From that premise, any new cell can come to exist without having a designated leader. For this reason, our emphasis is on leader’s multiplication rather than on cell multiplication. Our focus is on the multiplication of leaders, the cell multiplication will be added unto you.

Other ministries have expressed this thought as follows: the cells do not multiply; the leaders are who multiply. This way of saying is very absolutist. However, it conveys a truth. It is the truth of the importance that leaders multiplication has, for the cells to multiply as well.

These are the same reasons why in our statistical controls the number of cells is not registered anywhere. It counts the number of leaders only. Other information we collect are attendance, conversions, and baptisms in water.

The Leaders Route is fundamental to the multiplication of leaders and the mentors work is vital to consolidate Christians as new leaders. These are the keys to cell multiplication.

¡NO DESECHES A NADIE!

Joel Comiskey ha escrito en otras ocasiones sobre el tiempo que toma la multiplicación de una célula de una región del mundo a otra. Ha hablado que en Latinoamérica toma un aproximado de seis meses para que una célula madure y se multiplique, en Europa ese tiempo es de dos años.
Cada quien debe ubicarse en su contexto particular para no desarrollar expectativas excesivas a la hora de fijar sus metas de multiplicación, pero tampoco para establecer plazos demasiado laxos.
Independientemente del tiempo en cada contexto, la gran pregunta continúa siendo: ¿qué hacer con aquellas células que no se multiplican? Algunos han respondido que se deben clausurar. Nuestra posición en Elim es que no se debe desechar a ningún líder y no se debe cerrar ninguna célula. Si la multiplicación no se está produciendo es porque algo anda mal. Puede ser que el problema sea con el líder, puede ser que sea con la dinámica interna de la célula.
Pero esas dos cosas son remediables. Es tarea de los supervisores el examinar e identificar las debilidades. Luego, deben esforzarse por suplir los elementos que hacen falta. Jesús nunca desechó a nadie por incompetente, les ayudó a ser competentes. En el trabajo celular nada se debe desechar. No se trata de deshacerse de los eslabones débiles sino de convertirlos en eslabones fuertes. No debemos restar fuerzas sino sumar. Todos caben en el Reino de Dios y Jesús a nadie hecha fuera.
Situaciones como el pecado pueden conducir a cesar a un líder por un tiempo de restauración. Pero aún eso, es tiempo de restauración. Es un período de ayuda para luego seguir adelante con nuevas fuerzas.

Do not discard anyone!

Joel Comiskey has written on other occasions about the time it takes the cell multiplication from one region of the world to another. He has spoken that in Latin America it takes six months aproximately for a cell to mature and multiply, in Europe this time is of two years.

Everyone should be positioned in their particular context in order to avoid developing excessive expectations when setting their multiplication goals, but also to avoid setting too lax time limits.

Regardless of the time in each context, the big question remains: what to do with those cells that do not multiply? Some have answered these should be closed. Our position at Elim is that you must not discard any leader and should not close any cell. If multiplication is not happening it is because something is wrong. The problem maybe with the leader, might be with the cell’s internal dynamic.

But those two things are remediable. It is the coaches’ task to examine and identify weaknesses. Then, they should strive to supply the elements that are needed. Jesus never discarded anyone for incompetence, he helped them to be competent. In the cell work nothing should be discarded. It is not about getting rid of the weak links but of making them strong links. We must not subtract strength but insted add strength. There is room for everyone in the Kingdom of God and Jesus will not cast out anyone.

Situations like sin can lead to dismiss a leader for a time of restoration. But even that, it's restoration time. It is a period of support to move forward later on with renewed strength.

OBSTÁCULOS PARA LA MULTIPLICACIÓN

Los dos grandes obstáculos para lograr la multiplicación celular son la falta de evangelismo y la falta de líderes. Cuando los miembros de una célula descuidan la dimensión evangelizadora pronto se encontrarán atrapados por dinámicas internas que los harán olvidarse de los perdidos.
El aspecto evangelizador se pierde cuando la célula es vista solo como una reunión para tener comunión o para la edificación de los cristianos. Esos dos elementos son importantes pero deben balancearse con la evangelización. Si el evangelismo es dejado de lado, la célula perderá vitalidad y no se multiplicará.
El evangelizar provee de continuo elemento humano que se coloca en contacto con el evangelio y, de esa manera, la posibilidad de nuevas conversiones y de crecimiento numérico de la célula se incrementa.
No obstante, la maduración de la célula es solo una parte del panorama. El otro elemento importante es la multiplicación de los líderes. La multiplicación de las células depende de la multiplicación de los líderes. Si no hay nuevos líderes, no hay multiplicación. Por ese motivo, el evangelismo debe estar conectado con la Ruta del Líder y ésta con la formación de nuevos líderes. De esa manera, se establece un flujo que va de la conversión al liderazgo. Así, se multiplicarán tanto los líderes como las células.

Obstacles for multiplication.

The two major obstacles to cell division are the lack of evangelism and the lack of leaders. When cell members neglect the evangelizing dimension, they will soon find themselves trapped by internal dynamics that will make them forget about the lost.

The evangelistic aspect is lost when the cell is seen only as a meeting for fellowship or for Christians’ edification. Those two elements are important but must be balanced with evangelization. If evangelism is neglected, the cell will lose vitality and will not multiply.

Evangelizing provides continuous human element that is placed in contact with the Gospel and, in that way, the possibility of new conversions and of numerical growth of the cell increases.

However, the maturation of the cell is only part of the landscape. The other important element is the multiplication of leaders. The multiplication of cells depends on the multiplication of leaders. Without new leaders, there is no multiplication. For this reason, evangelism must be connected to the Leaders’ Route, and this, with the formation of new leaders. Thereby, a flow is established that goes from the conversion to the leadership. In this way, both leaders and cells will multiply.

CELEBRACIÓN Y CÉLULAS EN ELIM

En nuestra experiencia, la conexión entre la célula y la celebración es muy fuerte. Esta conexión la construimos en base a los siguientes elementos:
1. El concepto que todo líder maneja. Las células tienen un carácter fundamentalmente evangelizador. Esa evangelización no estará completa hasta que las personas asistan a la iglesia, se bauticen en agua y comiencen alguna función de servicio en la celebración.
2. Las invitaciones que se hacen a través de radio y televisión. En ellas se insiste ante el gran público para que asistan tanto a las células como a las celebraciones. Ya que nuestras reuniones de células se realizan en día sábado, es fácil concentrar la invitación en ese día particular.
3. El transporte hacia la iglesia. Cada supervisor organiza con el núcleo de las células la renta de un autobús. El propósito es el de ofrecer transporte gratuito a las personas que deseen asistir a la celebración. De esa manera se facilita el traslado y se fortalece la asistencia a las reuniones de celebración.
4. El enfoque del programa de la célula. En el se presenta a la célula como una extensión de la iglesia. Se señala la pertenencia a Elim. Al final, los anuncios también incluyen información sobre la iglesia, sus horarios de servicio, lugar, día y hora para abordar el autobús que les conducirá a la celebración.
5. También es parte del mentoreo de los nuevos cristianos el animarles y acompañarles para que se conecten y asistan a la celebración.
Las células no son entidades divorciadas de la celebración. Tampoco tienen como propósito sustituir a la celebración. Tampoco buscan desalentar a las personas para que asistan a la celebración ofreciéndoles una alternativa más cercana a su domicilio. Por el contrario, las células son brazos que prolongan el poder de atracción de la iglesia hacia sus celebraciones.

Celebration service and cells at Elim.

In our experience, the connection between cell and celebration is very strong. We build this connection based on the following elements:
1. Evangelism. The cells have a fundamentally evangelizing character. That evangelization will not be complete until people attend church’s celebration, are baptized in water and start a service function in the celebration.
2. The invitations that are made through radio and television. Through these we insist that the public attend both cell and celebration. Since our cell meetings are held on Saturday, it is easy to concentrate the invitation to each particular day and event.
3. The transportation to the church. Each supervisor organizes with the cell’s core to rent a bus. The purpose is to provide transportation to those who wish to attend the celebration. In that way, the mobilization is facilitated and the attendance to the celebration is strengthened.
4. The cell’s key role. The cell is presented as an extension of the church. At the end of each cell, announcements are made that include information about the church, its service schedule, place, date and time to board the bus, etc.
5. Celebration and cell play a role in mentoring new Christians.
The cells are not entities divorced from the celebration. Nor are they seeking to discourage people to attend the celebration by offering an alternative closer to their domicile. On the contrary, the cells are arms that extend the power of the church’s attraction toward its celebrations.

Como lo escribí en una ocasión anterior, es importante conectar el trabajo de las células con la celebración. Las células son el ambiente propicio para presentar el evangelio a los invitados; pero, una buena parte de esos invitados terminarán creyendo en la celebración. Por ese motivo, nuestras celebraciones de los días domingos son eminentemente evangelizadoras. El domingo se considera que es el día para recoger el fruto de lo que por semanas se ha sembrado en las células.
Tanto el trabajo celular como las celebraciones, se conectan así para la salvación de los perdidos de manera periódica. Este no es un esfuerzo que se haga ocasionalmente sino el trabajo de todas las semanas. Se establece así un ciclo entre células y celebración que se repite semana tras semana.
Esto, no significa que se desprecien las oportunidades para recoger la cosecha que se presentan eventualmente. Por ejemplo, apreciamos mucho el ministerio de los evangelistas. Éstos tienen el don de atraer grandes cantidades de personas a la fe. A veces se ha pensado que el potencial evangelizador de una iglesia celular es tan grande que puede volver innecesario al evangelista.
Por nuestra parte, creemos todo lo contrario. Vemos que el trabajo celular y el ministerio del evangelista son complementarios. Nunca está mejor preparada una iglesia para retener los resultados del ministerio de un evangelista que cuando es una iglesia celular. El modelo permite que la iglesia pueda dar seguimiento y atención a docenas o centenares de personas que crean en el Señor.
Así, aunque el ciclo evangelizador se repite cada semana, no despreciamos sino mas bien apreciamos y aprovechamos la visita de los verdaderos evangelistas para beneficio de aquellos que aun no conocen al salvador.

Cells and the Ministry of the Evangelist.
As I wrote on a previous occasion, it is important to connect the work of the cells with the celebration. The cells are the proper environment for the presentation of the Gospel to the guests, but a good part of those guests will end up believing during the celebration. For this reason, our celebrations on Sundays are essentially evangelistic. Sunday is considered the day to reap the fruit of what has been sown for weeks in the cells.
Both cell work and the celebrations are connected for the salvation of the lost in a periodic way. This is not an effort made occasionally, but an every week’s work. A cycle is established between cells and celebration that is repeated week after week.
This does not mean that the opportunities to reap the harvest that occur eventually are neglected. For example, we greatly appreciate the ministry of the evangelists.They have the gift of attracting large numbers of people to the faith. It is sometimes thought that the evangelizing potential of a cell church is so big that it can turn the evangelist into someone that is unnecessary.
For our part, we think the opposite. We see that the cell work and the ministry of the evangelist are complementary. The church is never better prepared to retain the results of the ministry of an evangelist than when it is a cell church. The model allows the church to do follow up and give assistance to dozens or hundreds of people who believe in the Lord.
So, even though the evangelizing cycle is repeated every week, we do not despise but rather appreciate and take advantage of the visit of the true evangelists for the benefit of those who still do not know the Savior.

De esa manera, nuestras células permiten dar respuestas que otras medidas no han podido dar hasta hoy. No se debe olvidar que también poseemos más de 1,500 células infantiles donde se atiende un promedio de 22,000 niños. El tema de la violencia y del perdón se desarrollan como temas de enseñanza semanal. Los líderes de células infantiles han sido instruidos en asuntos tales como el abuso verbal, físico y sexual. La idea, es dar una solución al grave problema de violencia juvenil que vive nuestro país.
Todo esto, por supuesto, aparte del trabajo que se hace con los enfermos, los matrimonios, los problemas de alcoholismo, etc.

Cells against violence.
San Salvador is the third most violent city in the world, after Ciudad Juarez in Mexico and San Pedro Sula in Honduras. The problem of gang violence is one of our major concerns as Christians. The reasons why young people needlessly spend their lives in a gang are diverse. But a very constant element is family disintegration.
The church, called to transform situations of sin, makes an effort to help solve the problem. The cells bring Christians near to people and that allows them to meet children who are growing up in disintegrated homes. We encourage members of our cells to emotionally adopt one of those children. That is, to provide the care, affection and acceptance they are lacking in their homes. Acceptance they will go out looking for in a gang unless Christians provide them with an alternative.

Doing this, our cells can give answers in a way that other measures have failed to give today. Let’s not forget that we also have over 1,500 children cells where an average of 22,000 children is assisted. The theme of violence and forgiveness are developed as weekly teaching topics. The children’s cell leaders have been instructed on issues such as verbal, physical and sexual abuse. The idea is to give a solution to the serious problem of youth violence that is lived in our country.

All of this is besides, of course, the work done with the sick, the marriages, and the alcoholism problems, etc.

La experiencia de comunidad que se vive en una reunión de casa es uno de los elementos que la convierten en una fuerza evangelizadora. No existe una oposición como la de afirmar que si una célula fomenta la comunión descuidará la evangelización. O, por el contrario, que si se dedica a evangelizar se obstaculizará la comunión.
En el modelo de la iglesia del Nuevo Testamento los dos elementos se sustentaban mutuamente. “De casa en casa partían el pan y compartían la comida con alegría y generosidad, alabando a Dios y disfrutando de la estimación general del pueblo. Y cada día el Señor añadía al grupo los que iban siendo salvos.” Hechos 2:46-47
Claramente se nota en este pasaje, como en otros, que la comunión y la evangelización son dos caras de una misma moneda. La una no excluye a la otra. Lo cierto es que la una no es posible sin la otra. Cuando una célula fomenta la comunión entre sus miembros se vuelve una comunidad muy atractiva para un mundo despersonalizado. Y cuando se trabaja en evangelizar se profundizan los lazos de comunión dentro del grupo. Haber evangelizado bien, es haber construido una buena comunión. Tener una buena comunión, producirá evangelización.

Fellowship leads to evangelization.
The experience of fellowship lived in a house meeting is one of the elements that make it an evangelizing force. There is no opposition as to assert that if a cell promotes fellowship it will neglect evangelization. Or, conversely, that if it engages in evangelism, fellowship will be hindered.
In the model of the New Testament Church the two elements were mutually supportive. " and they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. "Acts 2:46-47

It is clearly seen in this passage, as in others, that fellowship and evangelization are the two sides of a same coin. The one does not exclude the other. The truth is that one is not possible without the other. When a cell promotes fellowship among its members it becomes a very attractive community to an impersonal world. And when you work in evangelizing the bonds of fellowship deepen within the group. To have evangelized right, is to have built good fellowship. Having good fellowship, will produce evangelization.

El trabajo de Pablo se basó en buena medida en abrir reuniones en las casas. Estas reuniones se multiplicaban hasta llegar a convertirse en comunidades cristianas que influenciaban las ciudades.
Pero, basta con tomar un mapa del mundo del Nuevo Testamento para darse cuenta que Pablo dejó de lado varias ciudades importantes en donde no existe evidencia que haya plantado ninguna iglesia. Su meta evidente era plantar iglesias en ciudades estratégicas. Las ciudades las seleccionaba por su importancia comercial, política y ubicación geográfica. Pablo sabía que su expectativa de vida no le permitiría predicar en cada ciudad como él pudiera desear.
Eso le impulsó a adoptar la estrategia de plantar iglesias en las ciudades de influencia para que, luego, el evangelio se esparciera por toda la región sobre la cual esas ciudades ejercían su influencia. Un ejemplo de ello es la ciudad de Éfeso. Pablo dedicó una buena parte de su ministerio para fortalecer la obra en esa ciudad. El resultado fue que a partir de Éfeso el evangelio se extendió por toda la provincia de Asia. Lo mismo sucedió en otras regiones como Acaya y Macedonia.
A veces, las ciudades que escogió no fueron las más grandes y pobladas sino aquellas que mayor influencia tenían. En el trabajo de plantar iglesias es importante contar con una estrategia elaborada. De esa forma, se optimizan los recursos y se saca mayor provecho del tiempo que disponemos.

Paul’s church planting strategy.

Paul's work was based largely on opening meetings in houses. These meetings would multiply up to becoming a Christian community that would influence the cities.

But, you realize by just taking a map of the world of the New Testament that Paul put aside several major cities where there is no evidence that any church was planted. His obvious goal was to plant churches in strategic cities. The cities were selected for their commercial and political importance, and geographic location. Paul knew that his life expectancy would not allow him to preach in every town as he could wish.

That prompted him to adopt the strategy of planting churches in the cities of influence so that, afterwards, the gospel would spread throughout the region on which those cities were exercising their influence. An example of that is the city of Ephesus. Paul spent a large part of his ministry to strengthen the work in that city. The result was that from Ephesus the Gospel spread throughout the whole province of Asia. The same happened in other regions such as Achaia and Macedonia.

Sometimes, the cities that he chose were not the largest and most populated ones, but those that had the greatest influence. In the work of church planting it is important to have an elaborated strategy. In that way, resources are optimized and the time we have available is better used.

Una de las cualidades de los plantadores de iglesias es que deben tener un aprecio por el Cuerpo de Cristo. Este aprecio debe manifestarse en un esfuerzo por alcanzar la cooperación con otras denominaciones.
Probablemente, una de las mayores debilidades en la plantación de iglesias sea la de la duplicación de esfuerzos, el desaprovechamiento de la experiencia de otros y la falta de una visión estratégica. El conocer lo que otros planean y el dar a conocer lo que se piensa es vital para elaborar un esfuerzo conjunto. Este esfuerzo permite construir acuerdos para una optimización de las finanzas, la disponibilidad de recursos humanos y una mayor eficacia evangelizadora.
Cuando se trabaja de manera aislada, el plantar nuevas iglesias puede llegar a ser contraproducente para otros esfuerzos que ya se hacen. Incluso, puede conducir a una competencia innecesaria entre denominaciones. No se trata de extender un reinado eclesiástico o personal. Se trata de extender el reino de Dios.
Probablemente en determinado sector o ciudad no habrá un edificio con el nombre de cada denominación existente. Tal vez, el nombre de una denominación no se encuentre; pero, lo importante es que exista una iglesia que sea la luz en esa comunidad. En lugar de acumular iglesias, lado a lado sobre una calle, es mejor ubicarlas estratégicamente para obtener una red mucho más extensa y amplia. De esa manera, se estará trabajando como Cuerpo de Cristo y no como una empresa personal.

The cooperation in church planting.
One of the characteristics of church planters is that they must have an appreciation for the Body of Christ. This appreciation should manifest itself in an effort to achieve cooperation with other denominations.
Probably one of the main weaknesses in church planting is the duplication of efforts, wastage of the experience of others and the lack of a strategic vision. Knowing what others are planning and to let others know what we think is vital to develop a joint effort. This effort can build agreements for the optimization of finances, human resource availability and a more effective evangelization.
When working in isolation, planting new churches can be counterproductive to other efforts that are already been done. This may even lead to an unnecessary competition between denominations. It is not about extending a personal or ecclesiastical kingdom. It is about extending the kingdom of God.
Probably in a particular sector or city there will not be a building with the name of each existing denomination. Perhaps the name of a denomination will not be there, but the important thing is that there is a church that is the light in that community. Instead of accumulating churches, side by side on a street, it is best to place them strategically to get a much more extensive and wider network. In that way, you will be working as the Body of Christ and not as a personal enterprise.

Llevar estadísticas de las células es importante porque es un asunto que está muy ligado al de las metas. Solamente se puede saber cómo se encuentra una iglesia con relación a sus metas por medio de los registros estadísticos.
Como bien se ha dicho: lo que no se puede medir, no se puede monitorear. Pero el avance del trabajo celular sí puede ser medido. Consecuentemente, también puede ser monitoreado. Por ello, las estadísticas deben ser fiables, precisas y periódicas. Asegurando esas características, las estadísticas se vuelven una herramienta poderosa para evaluar y dirigir el trabajo celular.
Sin duda que los aspectos numéricos son solo una parte del trabajo celular. Pero, siendo parte de él, es importante no descuidarlo. No se debe dejar de lado el control estadístico bajo la excusa que lo más importante de las células no son los números sino la comunión o el evangelismo. Pero, aún la comunión y el evangelismo son medibles.
Obviamente, el llevar registros estadísticos demanda esfuerzo y constancia. Pero, una vez el mecanismo de recopilación de datos está establecido, el proceso transcurrirá sin dificultades cada semana. Existen aplicaciones informáticas para facilitar el trabajo. Pero, es probable que una iglesia prefiera desarrollar su propio sistema. Lo importante es no dejar a la deriva una herramienta vital para el alcance de las metas.

Statistics and Goals.

It is important to keep cells’ statistics because this is an issue that is closely tied to the goals. You can only know how a church is doing in relation to its goals through the statistical records.

As it has been said whatever can not be measured, can not be monitored. But the progress of the cell work can be measured. Consequently, it can also be monitored. Therefore, the statistics must be reliable, accurate and periodical. Securing these characteristics, the statistics become a powerful tool to assess and direct the cell work.

There is no doubt that the numerical aspects are only one part of the cell work. But as part of it, is important not to neglect it. The statistical control must not be left aside under the excuse that the most important thing about cells is not the numbers but the fellowship or the evangelism. But even the fellowship and evangelism are measurable.

Obviously, keeping statistical archives demands effort and perseverance. But, once the data collection mechanism is established, the process will elapse without difficulty each week. There are computer applications to facilitate the work. But a church is likely to prefer to develop its own system. The important thing is not to let a vital tool for the achievement of goals drift away.

Los datos estadísticos que llevamos en Elim son los siguientes:
• Número de líderes. No contamos el número de células sino de líderes. El trabajo celular sigue una estrategia de liderazgo. Los líderes son más decisivos que las células. Por tanto, nos interesa conocer con cuántos líderes se cuenta. De ello dependerá la multiplicación.
• Asistencia. Tanto de los hermanos miembros del núcleo de la célula como de invitados. Con ello, se sabe la cantidad de personas que están siendo alcanzadas con el evangelio.
• Conversiones. Si un propósito de las células es la evangelización, solo se puede saber si ese propósito se está logrando por medio de este control.
• Visitas. No basta con que una persona reciba a Jesús. Se le debe injertar en la vida de iglesia. Las visitas durante las primeras semanas después de la conversión son vitales para afirmar a esa persona en la fe.
• Bautismos en agua. Este es el paso final con el que se sella una conversión. El bautismo en agua es un paso más allá en la nueva vida de un creyente.
Por el tipo de datos que recogemos es evidente que nuestros grandes prioridades son la evangelización y la consolidación de los nuevos creyentes. No solamente son estos los aspectos que se llevan en estadísticas sino que son también los que se evalúan. Al asignarle a cada uno de estos aspectos un porcentaje de evaluación, se enfatiza su importancia.

Statistics and their justification.

The statistics we manage in Elim are:

• Number of leaders. We don’t count the number of cells but of leaders. The cell work follows a leadership strategy. The leaders are more decisive than the cells. Therefore, we are interested in knowing how many leaders we have. Multiplication will depend on it.
• Attendance. Of both, the brethrens members of the cell core as of the guests. The amount of people that are being reached with the gospel is acknowledged with it.
• Conversions. If evangelism is one of the cells’ purposes, we can only know if that purpose is being achieved by this control.
• Visits. A person receiving Jesus is not enough. He/she must be grafted into the church life. Visits during the first weeks after the conversion are vital to affirm that person in the faith.
• Baptism in water. This is the final step with which a conversion is sealed. The Baptism in water is a step further in a believer’s new life.

For the type of data we collect it is clear that our main priorities are evangelization and the consolidation of new believers. These are not only the aspects that are managed in statistics but are also the ones that are evaluated. Their importance is emphasized by assigning to each one of these aspects a percentage of assessment.

La recolección de los datos estadísticos en Elim sigue el orden natural de la estructura de trabajo y se encuentra dividido entre todos sus integrantes. Veamos, el líder llena el reporte de su célula y lo entrega a su supervisor. El supervisor elabora un reporte de las células de su sector sobre la base de los reportes que ha recibido de cada uno de sus líderes. Luego, el supervisor entrega su reporte al pastor de zona.
El pastor de zona es ya una persona trabajando a tiempo completo para la iglesia. El pastor elabora un reporte de su zona sobre la base de los reportes de todos sus supervisores. Después entrega su reporte a su pastor de distrito. El pastor de distrito elabora, a su vez, un reporte sobre la base de la información que le han dado sus pastores de zona.
Por último, los pastores de distritos envían sus estadísticas a la secretaría donde, sumando los datos de los nueve distritos, se elabora el reporte de toda la iglesia. Este proceso se realiza cada semana y es parte de la rutina de trabajo de los involucrados en la labor celular.
En Elim no utilizamos ninguna aplicación (software) especializada. No hemos encontrado una aplicación que llene cabalmente nuestras necesidades. El trabajo se hace hasta el nivel de supervisores de manera manual. De allí en adelante se hace utilizando hojas electrónicas de cálculo.
Obviamente, Elim es una iglesia con una estructura de trabajo completa y con 25 años de experiencia. Eso permite tener datos firmes cada semana. Pero, algunos principios pueden extraerse y acoplarse a iglesias menos estructuradas.

Collection of statistics.
The collection of statistical data in Elim follows the natural order of the work structure and it is divided among all its members. Let’s see, the leader fills out his cell report and gives it to his supervisor. The supervisor prepares a report of the cells of his sector based on the reports he has received from each of his leaders. Then the supervisor hands in his report to the zone pastor.
The zone pastor is a person already working full time for the church. The pastor prepares a report of his zone based on the reports from all his supervisors. Then he delivers his report to his district pastor. The district pastor also prepares a report based on the information given by his zone pastors.

Finally, the district pastors send their statistics to the Secretariat where the data of the nine districts are added up to create a report of the whole church. This process is carried out every week and is part of the work routine of those involved in the cell work.

At Elim we do not use in any specialized software. We have not found a software that meets our precise needs. The work is done manually up to the level of supervisors. Thereafter it is done using worksheets.
Obviously, Elim is a church with a full working structure and with 25 years of experience. That allows having firm data each week. But, some principles can be extracted and coupled to less structured churches.

The statistics paradox.

It has been said that statistics should be updated, accurate and collect enough information to monitor the work properly. The statistics become a more efficient tool for new achievements as they are improved.

But at the same time, a problem of statistics becoming so complete that they may replace the reality can occur. That is, that people who monitor can rely so much on good statistics that end up replacing reality itself for the reports.

From there on, goals, projections, evaluations and key aspects of the work will be done based on a reality of paper and ink, but not on the true reality. In such a case, statistics become a barrier to access reality.
That is the statistics paradox. We must strive to have even more efficient statistics, but at the same time a tool that can move us away from reality instead of bringing us closer to it, is being built.
To avoid such paradox, who monitors, must always be in continuous contact with reality, and must be immersed in the real work of the houses, must permanently relate with the life of the cells and continuously confront the reality with the statistics. Only then the statistics will not lose their true benefit.

Os dons do Espírito e a evangelização

Não resta dúvida de que os textos do Novo Testamento a respeito de dons do Espírito Santo se relacionam à sua prática nas reuniões nas casas. É sabido que os prédios para o culto cristão começaram a ser construídos após a conclusão da escrita da Bíblia.

Um trecho importante que conduz o tópico dos dons do Espírito ao evangelismo se encontra em 1 Coríntios 14.23: "Imaginem que a igreja esteja reunida e todos comecem a falar em línguas estranhas. Se chegarem ali algumas pessoas simples ou descrentes, será que não vão dizer que vocês estão loucos?"

A prática fora de controle dos dons do Espírito pode criar uma situação que pareça loucura aos olhos de incrédulos. Paulo recomenda que para que isso não aconteça se deve regular o uso dos dons nas casas. Isso nos fala da preocupação do apóstolo de guardar a imagem da igreja diante da opinião pública. A imagem devia ser protegida para não causar obstáculos ao trabalho de evangelismo.

Não basta que um dom do Espírito seja genuíno e seja exercido com toda honestidade. Também é necessário fazê-lo em uma ordem que não provoque nos amigos a ideia de que o evangelho é uma coisa de loucos. O trabalho nas células não deve perder de vista os convidados. A preocupação de Paulo era a imagem que as reuniões nas casas podiam causar nos incrédulos. Essa também deve ser a nossa preocupação. Embora não devamos negligenciar o uso dos dons espirituais na célula e celebração, devemos fazê-lo de tal maneira que mesmo os de fora (convidados) sejam edificados.

The gifts of the Spirit and the evangelization.

There is no doubt that the New Testament passages that mention the gifts of the Holy Spirit relate to their practice in the houses meetings. It is known that the buildings for Christian worship began to be constructed after the completion of the writing of the Scripture.
An important passage linking the topic of the gifts of the Spirit to evangelism is found in 1 Corinthians 14: 23 “If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?”
The out of control practice of the gifts of the Spirit, can create a situation that could seem like madness in the eyes of unbelievers. For such a thing to ever happen Paul recommends, the regulation of the use of the gifts in the houses. That speaks of the Apostle's concern for keeping the Church’s image before the public opinion. The image had to be protected to avoid hindering the evangelization work.
A genuine gift of the Spirit and its practice in all honesty is not enough. It is imperative to do it in an order that will not cause friends to think that the gospel is a crazy thing. Guests should not be neglected because of the work in the cells. The image that the meetings in houses could give to unbelievers was Paul’s concern. We should make that same concern our own. We should not dismiss the practice of the gifts, but we should not forget either that there will always be guests present.

LOS DONES DEL ESPÍRITU Y LA EVANGELIZACIÓN

Sin duda que los pasajes del Nuevo Testamento que mencionan los dones del Espíritu Santo se refieren al ejercicio de los mismos en las reuniones en las casas. Es sabido que los edificios para culto cristiano comenzaron a construirse después de concluida la redacción de las Escrituras.
Un pasaje importante que relaciona el tema de los dones con la evangelización lo encontramos en 1 Corintios 14: 23 ‘Así que, si toda la iglesia se reúne y todos hablan en lenguas, y entran algunos que no entienden o no creen, ¿no dirán que ustedes están locos?’
Ante el ejercicio fuera de control de los dones del Espíritu, se puede crear una situación que parezca locura a los ojos de los incrédulos. Pablo recomienda que para que tal cosa no ocurra, se debe regular el uso de los dones en las casas. Eso nos habla de la preocupación del apóstol por guardar la imagen de la iglesia ante la opinión pública. La imagen debía ser protegida para no obstaculizar el trabajo evangelizador.
No basta con que un don del Espíritu sea genuino y sea ejercido con toda honestidad. También se necesita hacerlo en un orden que no provoque en los amigos la idea que el evangelio es cosa de locos. El trabajo en las células no debe perder de vista a los invitados. La preocupación de Pablo era la imagen que las reuniones en casas podían dar a los incrédulos. Nosotros debemos hacer propia la misma preocupación. No debemos desechar el ejercicio de los dones, pero tampoco debemos olvidar que siempre habrá invitados presentes.

Prayer for the sick in the cell.

When we talk about the gifts of the Spirit we tend to limit them to speaking in tongues and the prophecy. But we must not forget that healings and miracles are also gifts of the Spirit.
In a congregation whose membership is growing, it is increasingly difficult for the pastor to pray for all the sick. This is not because of lack of willingness, but because objectively it is increasingly difficult to devote adequate time to pray for a growing number of needs.
In fact, the pastor can pray for all the sick he whishes. But, the instruction that tells us to pray for each other to be healed should not be left a side (James 5:16). This is a duty that should be practiced as part of all believers priesthood.

Obviously, the best milieu to pray for each other is in cells. It is the place where people know each other intimately. Where they can broadly share their situations. Where stronger emotional ties are established. This results in a more personal healing prayer.
In the celebrations the pastor can make a general prayer for all the sick, even for those who are not present. But in the cell you can confess each others faults, place hands on the sick and pray for the operation of the gifts of healing. The cell is the ideal place for believers to serve each other through their spiritual gifts.

LA ORACIÓN POR LOS ENFERMOS EN LA CÉLULA

Al hablar del tema de los dones del Espíritu tendemos a limitarnos a las lenguas y la profecía. Pero, no hay que olvidar que también son dones del Espíritu las sanidades y los milagros.
En una congregación cuyo número de miembros va en aumento, resulta cada vez más difícil para el pastor el orar por todos los enfermos. Esto no por causa de falta de voluntad, sino porque objetivamente es cada vez más difícil dedicar el tiempo adecuado para orar por una cantidad creciente de necesidades.
En realidad, el pastor puede orar por los enfermos que desee. Pero, no debe dejarse de lado la enseñanza que nos dice que debemos orar los unos por los otros para ser sanados (Santiago 5:16). Esta es una función que debe ejercitarse como parte del sacerdocio de todos los creyentes.
Obviamente, el mejor ambiente para orar los unos por los otros es en las células. Es el lugar donde las personas se conocen íntimamente. Donde pueden compartir sus situaciones de manera más amplia. Donde se establecen lazos emocionales más fuertes. Todo ello da como resultado una oración por sanidad más personalizada.
En las celebraciones el pastor puede hacer una oración general por todos los enfermos, aun aquellos que no estén presentes. Pero en la célula es posible confesarse mutuamente las faltas, colocar las manos sobre los enfermos y orar para que los dones de sanidades operen. La célula es el lugar ideal para que los creyentes se sirvan los unos a los otros por medio de sus dones espirituales.

What gift do you want?

Paul encourages Christians to seek the gifts (1 Corinthians 14:1, 14:39). In his presentation he reveals that receiving a gift is a process that starts with the person’s simple desire of having it. The starting point is, then, which gift is the one you desire?

Normally, we think of gifts as something God gives without any relation to our human desires. After all, aren’t they called gifts? Something God gives on his own initiative?

We believe a good gift is the one which truly satisfies our interests. We have all once received gifts that are completely useless to us. A 90 year old man bewailed his friends had such a short memory that they had given him a coffee machine for the third time in his life. All identical. Another woman received from her friend a set of cups that she had given her a couple of years earlier.

But sometimes we receive gifts that fully satisfy us, which are very much appreciated. Well, God makes pretty good gifts. And he will never give us something we do not feel satisfied with. Can you think of someone who has a gift that he/she does not want?

Therefore, the cell members should be encouraged to select the gift they would like to have most. That is the first step to receiving it.

¿QUÉ DON DESEAS?

Pablo anima a los cristianos a buscar los dones (1 Co. 14:1; 14:39). En su presentación deja ver que el recibir un don es un proceso que comienza por el simple deseo de la persona de tenerlo. El punto inicial es, entonces, ¿cuál don es el que deseas?
Normalmente, pensamos de los dones como algo que Dios otorga sin ninguna relación con nuestros deseos humanos. Al fin y al cabo ¿no se llaman dones? ¿Algo que Dios da por iniciativa propia?
Consideramos un buen regalo aquél que verdaderamente satisface nuestros intereses. Todos hemos recibido alguna vez regalos que nos son del todo inútiles. Un anciano de 90 años lamentaba que sus amistades tuvieran tan corta memoria que ya le habían regalado una cafetera por tercera vez en su vida. Todas idénticas. A otra señora su amiga le regaló un juego de tazas que ella misma le había dada unos años antes.
Pero, a veces, nos dan regalos que nos satisfacen plenamente y los apreciamos mucho. Bueno, Dios sabe dar muy buenos regalos. Y él nunca nos dará algo que no nos satisfaga. ¿Puedes pensar en alguien que tenga un don que no desea?
Por ello, se debe animar a los miembros de la célula para que seleccionen el don que más les gustaría tener. Ese es el primer paso para recibirlo.

With order and decency

The dangers to be avoided when practicing the gifts in the cells are the same dangers of which Paul warned the church in the houses at Corinth.
The first danger is to attempt protagonism. Given the fascination that people experience towards the supernatural, there is a tendency to see people with gifts as unusual beings. That can produce proud attitudes in those who practice the gifts. Therefore, Paul recommends that gifts should be practiced with the sole purpose of edifying other believers (1 Corinthians 14:12).
You must also be careful not to give an inappropriate impression of the gospel to unbelievers. Paul says we must be very careful in the practice of the gifts so that guests do not think that Christians are crazy (1 Corinthians 14:23).
The gifts must be practiced within the established order. That order indicates that only two people can speak in tongues. Three at the most. Moreover one at a time. All this, as long as there is one to interpret. If there is no interpreter, who speaks in tongues must refrain from doing so (1 Corinthians 14:27-28).
As for prophecies, likewise, only two or three people should speak. If anything was revealed to another person, the first should be silent to give to the second one the opportunity to speak (1 Corinthians 14:29-30).

Paul's final words on the subject are excellent to close this blog: “Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14:39-40).

Los peligros que se deben evitar al ejercer los dones en las células son los mismos peligros acerca de los cuales Pablo advirtió a la iglesia en las casas en Corinto.
El primer peligro es el procurar el protagonismo. Dada la fascinación que las personas experimentan hacia lo sobrenatural, se tiende a ver a las personas con dones como seres fuera de lo normal. Eso puede producir actitudes de orgullo en quienes ejercen los dones. Por ello, Pablo recomienda que los dones deben ser ejercidos con el propósito único de edificar a los demás creyentes (1 Co. 14:12).
También se debe cuidar el no dar una impresión inadecuada del evangelio a los no creyentes. Pablo dice que debemos tener mucho cuidado en el ejercicio de los dones de manera que los invitados no piensen que los cristianos son locos (1 Co. 14:23).
Los dones deben ser ejercitados dentro de un orden ya establecido. Ese orden indica que solamente dos personas pueden hablar en lenguas. A lo sumo tres. Además, deben hacerlo por turno. Todo ello, siempre y cuando haya quien interprete. Al no haber un interprete quienes hablan en lenguas deben abstenerse de hacerlo (1 Co. 14:27-28).
En cuanto a las profecías, de igual manera, solo deben hacerlo dos o tres personas. En caso que algo que fuera revelado a otra persona, la primera debe callar para ceder la oportunidad a la segunda (1 Co. 14:29-30).
Las palabras finales de Pablo sobre el tema son excelentes para cerrar este blog: “Procurad profetizar, y no impidáis el hablar en lenguas; pero hágase todo decentemente y con orden” (1 Co. 14:39-40).

God will provide the essential budget.

The largest investment made in a cell church is the pastors’ salaries. In a complete structure with zone and district pastors, the budget´s percentage to be spent on wages is significant.
But it is important to note that the structure and its budget are not imposed to any church all at once. The structure and the pastoral team grow as the church grows. No one should think that the hiring of pastors precedes the growth. On the contrary, it is the growth which demands the recruitment of new pastors.
This means that the model is economically sustainable. At the same time as the growth demands the hiring of a new pastor, it is already providing the necessary to pay his salary. It is the increase of new members which demands one more pastor, but at the same time those members are already prepared to provide the financial support to cover the payment of the new position.
Other expenses such as stationery materials, offices, facilities etc., are really minor and some of them are made once in life. You just have to go one step at a time. There is no need to worry thinking on the budget of a developed church when you barely need to take the first steps which will not even involve major investments. Time will tell its demands and then God will provide.

DIOS PROVEERÁ EL PRESUPUESTO NECESARIO

La mayor inversión que se hace en una iglesia celular consiste en los salarios de los pastores. En una estructura completa con pastores de distritos y de zonas, el porcentaje del presupuesto que debe invertirse en salarios es considerable.
Pero es importante tener en cuenta que la estructura y su presupuesto no se imponen de una vez a ninguna iglesia. La estructura y el equipo pastoral va creciendo en la medida que la misma iglesia crece. No se debe pensar que la contratación de pastores precede el crecimiento. Todo lo contrario, es el crecimiento el que demanda la contratación de nuevos pastores.
Esto significa que el modelo es económicamente sostenible. Al mismo tiempo que el crecimiento demanda la contratación de un nuevo pastor, ya está proveyendo lo necesario para su salario. Es el incremento de nuevos miembros el que demanda un pastor más, pero al mismo tiempo esos miembros están ya preparados para proveer el soporte económico para cubrir el pago de la nueva plaza.
Los demás gastos como papelería, materiales, oficinas, locales, etc., son realmente menores y algunos de ellos se hacen una vez en la vida. Solamente hay que ir un paso a la vez. No hay que preocuparse pensando en el presupuesto de una iglesia desarrollada cuando apenas se necesita dar los primeros pasos que ni siquiera implicarán mayores inversiones. El tiempo dirá sus demandas y, entonces, Dios proveerá.

The offerings in the houses

As I have explained on other occasions, we knew about the cell work through Pastor Cho’s books. Until today, our model is very similar to the Korean. Only a few adjustments have been made according to our context.

From the outset, we learned that Pastor Cho’s cells collected offerings; that started a debate within Elim. On one side were those who felt offerings shouldn’t be collected at a meeting which had guests as main addressees. Was it not sending a bad message to ask people for money in the first meeting?

But there was another group who thought the offerings are not a bad thing, on the contrary, it is part of the Gospel. Consequently, if the cells are intended to present the Gospel, the collection of offerings had to be included.

I must be honest and say that the discussion did not reach a conclusion. We decided to collect offerings only because that was what Pastor Cho did and we wanted to succeed like he did.
Today, 25 years after starting our cell work, we have no doubts regarding the subject. Even though I understand and respect the churches that decide not to collect offerings, but only in the celebration.

I just want to finish with a thought. The theme of the offerings is mentioned in the New Testament. And the New Testament church had no buildings where to meet. They did it in houses. All references in the New Testament on the subject of the offerings relate to offerings that were collected in the houses.

LAS OFRENDAS EN LAS CASAS

Como lo he explicado en otras ocasiones, conocimos del trabajo celular a través de los libros del Pastor Cho. Hasta el día de hoy, nuestro modelo es muy parecido al de Corea. Solamente se han hecho algunas adaptaciones de acuerdo a nuestro contexto.
Desde un primer momento supimos que en las células del Pastor Cho se recogían ofrendas; eso produjo un debate dentro de Elim. Por un lado estaban aquellos que pensaban que no debían recogerse ofrendas en una reunión que tenía como principales destinatarios a los invitados. ¿Acaso no era un mal mensaje que en un primer acercamiento se les solicitara dinero a las personas?
Pero había otro grupo que pensaba que las ofrendas no son algo malo; por el contrario, es una parte del evangelio. Consecuentemente, si las células tienen como propósito presentar el evangelio, se debía incluir el recoger ofrendas.
Debo ser sincero y decir que la discusión no llegó a una conclusión. Se decidió recoger ofrendas solamente porque eso era lo que hacía el Pastor Cho y nosotros queríamos tener éxito como él.
Hoy, 25 años después de haber iniciado nuestro trabajo celular, ya no tenemos ninguna duda con respecto al tema. Aunque comprendo y respeto a las iglesias que deciden no recoger ofrendas sino solamente en la celebración.
Solo quiero terminar con un pensamiento. El tema de las ofrendas es mencionado en el Nuevo Testamento. Y la iglesia del Nuevo Testamento no tenía locales para reunirse. Lo hacían en las casas. Todas las menciones del Nuevo Testamento sobre el tema de las ofrendas se refiere a ofrendas que se colectaban en las casas.

Finances and the appointment of new ministers

In the church we normally do not keep statistics of the amount of money a leader or a supervisor gathers. Consequently, the financial recovery is not a factor taken into account when promoting a person to the position of pastor. There would be no way to prove that a person has been financially effective or not.
But, indirectly, it is true that the finances are implicit in each promotion. The offerings are proportional to the amount of cells you have. The greater the number of cells, it is logical to think there will be a greater collection of offerings. Since the multiplication is one of the most important factors when selecting a new pastor, implied in it is also the multiplication of offerings. Even though we do not keep track of it.
For that reason, I had previously expressed that the same cell development creates the basis to incorporate new pastors to the team work. We must not anticipate to the facts thinking on how the church will face the issue of a new salary. If a new pastor is needed, it will be only because more people are participating of the Christian life in the congregation. Offering is one way of participating.

Cells’ financial goals

There is no doubt that the offerings gathered in cells are very important to the finances of the church. When the opportunity to purchase the last available TV frequency of national coverage in El Salvador came up, the church took a big bank loan. The monthly fee involved a rather high burden on the finances of the church. But a year later, the opportunity to buy 14 hectares of land came up. The price was a real offer, but the church had already reached its ability to pay limit.

But, as on other occasions, we decided to draw on our cell leaders. What we did is that we split the monthly fee among the number of leaders. That means two dollars a week per each cell. Since the average attendance in our adult’s cells is of 9, the contribution of twenty five dollar cents per week from each cell member is enough to complete the payment.
Thus, we are close to five years now paying the loan and we have already paid off more than half. I believe that with each leader´s exerted work we will finish to pay it without much difficulty. Such things would not have been possible without a financial commitment between the cells and the church.

The transition in Elim Church

The transition in Elim from a church of programs to a cell church was promptly done, in just a few weeks. The transition was successful. What elements made a good transition possible in such a short time?
I will mention the following ones:

• The church did not have a congregational organization. Therefore, there was no practice of submitting the decisions that were taken to the general opinion.
• The Pastor had a very strong leadership. He had earned the congregation’s respect and admiration. What he suggested was seen with affability and usually without questioning.
• The church lived a situation of spiritual effervescence. In nine years it had passed from 9 to 3,000 members and they all wanted to go for more.
• Pastor Cho’s books had arrived to El Salvador four years earlier and they had caused an impact in the country. Pastor Cho's church was seen as a model, which at that time, nobody knew exactly in what it consisted, but all wanted to reproduce.
Despite all of the above, you can not say that the transition went without any incidents. Yes, there were people who decided to leave the congregation. Others resisted the cell work for some time. But those cases were so few that hardly anyone noticed them.
The results came so soon that no one doubted the best decision had been made. In the first year as a cell church it went from 3,000 to 10,000 members. To that short period of transition that fruit was the best closing.

LA TRANSICIÓN DE IGLESIA ELIM

En Elim la transición de una iglesia de programas a una iglesia celular se realizó de una manera muy pronta, en tan solo unas semanas. La transición fue exitosa. ¿Qué elementos hicieron posible una buena transición en tan corto tiempo?
Menciono los siguientes:
• La iglesia no tenía una organización congregacional. Por tanto, no existía la costumbre de someter a la opinión general las decisiones que se tomaban.
• El Pastor tenía un liderazgo muy fuerte. Se había ganado el respeto y la admiración de la congregación. Lo que él sugería se veía con mucho agrado y, generalmente, sin cuestionamientos.
• La iglesia vivía una situación de efervescencia espiritual. En nueve años había pasado de 9 a 3,000 miembros y todos querían ir por más.
• Los libros del Pastor Cho habían llegado cuatro años antes a El Salvador y ellos habían provocado un impacto en el país. Se veía a la iglesia de Cho como un modelo que, por entonces, nadie sabía en qué consistía exactamente, pero que todos querían reproducir.
A pesar de todo lo anterior, no se puede decir que la transición se hizo sin incidentes. Sí hubo personas que decidieron salirse de la congregación. Otros resistieron por algún tiempo el trabajo celular. Pero esos casos fueron tan pocos que casi nadie los advirtió.
Los resultados se darían tan pronto que nadie dudó que se había tomado la mejor decisión. En el primer año como iglesia celular se pasó de 3,000 a 10,000 miembros. Ese fruto fue el mejor cierre a ese corto período de transición.

Knowledge, knowledge is the key

In my experience, I have noticed that the main reason for a transition to fail is the lack of knowledge or an inadequate knowledge.
The church’s pastor must understand very well what the biblical foundations of cell work are and must be clear about the values and principles. Most transitions fail because the church’s pastor doesn’t have a clear awareness of where he is going and what is to be expected from the future.
In a second moment, it is very important to have the pastor share his knowledge with the church. It is better to be repetitive and accused of teaching always the same thing, than to assume that people know the things already and walk on a fictitious basis.
The information should be profusely given, as the main part of the service. Not as marginal information in a small room of the church for those interested only, much less reduce it to a section in the Sunday bulletin. The teaching should pervade the Sunday’s main message in the pulpit and must do so as long as it is necessary.
Finally, the pastor’s collaborators must be also well informed. As leaders of the congregation, they are key in the acceptance of the new model. It is highly recommended that they live the experience of life in cells so they can acquire a proper perspective of the work.
If you see to strengthen, illustrate, repeat and repeat all over again the teaching you will be avoiding one of the main obstacles to an effective transition.

CONOCIMIENTO, CONOCIMIENTO ES LA CLAVE.

En mi experiencia he notado que la razón principal para que una transición fracase es la falta de conocimiento o un conocimiento inadecuado.

El pastor de la iglesia debe comprender muy bien cuáles son los fundamentos bíblicos del trabajo celular y debe tener claridad de los valores y los principios. La mayor parte de transiciones fracasan porque el pastor de la iglesia no posee una conciencia clara de hacia dónde se dirige y qué es lo que debe esperar del futuro.

En un segundo momento, es muy importante que el pastor comparta su conocimiento con la iglesia. Es mejor ser repetitivo y ser acusado de enseñar siempre lo mismo, que suponer que las personas ya saben las cosas y caminar sobre una base ficticia.

La información debe darse profusamente, como parte principal del servicio. No como una información marginal en un salón pequeño de la iglesia para los interesados y mucho menos reducirla a una sección en el boletín dominical. La enseñanza debe ocupar el mensaje principal el día domingo en el púlpito y debe hacerlo por todo el tiempo que sea necesario.

Finalmente, también deben estar muy bien informados los colaboradores del pastor. Como líderes de la congregación, ellos son clave en la aceptación del nuevo modelo. Es altamente recomendable que ellos vivan la experiencia de la vida en células para que puedan adquirir una perspectiva correcta del trabajo.

Si se cuida de fortalecer, ilustrar, repetir y volver a repetir la enseñanza se estará evitando uno de los principales obstáculos para una transición efectiva.

Elim Mission’s family

Each time when talking about cell work if the discussion heads to a debate between mega-churches or simple churches, you're missing the primary meaning of cells.

The cells are not a method to develop mega-churches, but are the return to the New Testament church model where values such as of the universal priesthood of Christians, mutual edification and the practice of evangelization are rescued.

These values are the true wealth of cell work. The celebration’s dimensions respond to the particularities of the city, the gifts granted to a preacher and the particular vision of each minister.

In Elim Mission not all is about mega-churches. From about 125 churches that make up our mission, only two are mega-churches with over 10,000 members. Other three have around 2,000 members. About four have around 500 to 1,000 members. The rest range from 75 to 500 members.

But regardless the size of the membership, all of them live the values and principles of cell work and that gives whole meaning to the effort.

LA FAMILIA DE MISIÓN ELIM

Cada vez que al hablar del trabajo celular la discusión se encamina al debate entre mega-iglesias o iglesias sencillas, se está perdiendo el sentido principal de las células.
Las células no son un método para desarrollar mega-iglesias sino que es el regreso al modelo de iglesia del Nuevo Testamento en donde se rescatan valores tales como los del sacerdocio universal de los cristianos, la edificación mutua y el ejercicio de la evangelización.
Estos valores son la verdadera riqueza del trabajo celular. Las dimensiones de la celebración responden a las particularidades de la ciudad, a los dones otorgados a un predicador y a la visión particular de cada ministro.
En Misión Elim no todo se trata de mega-iglesias. De alrededor de 125 iglesias que forman nuestra Misión, solamente dos son mega-iglesias con más de 10,000 miembros. Otras tres rondan los 2,000 miembros. Unas cuatro andan entre 500 y 1,000 miembros. El resto oscila entre 75 a 500 miembros.
Pero sin importar la dimensión de la membresía, todas ellas viven los valores y principios del trabajo celular y eso le da todo el sentido al esfuerzo.

The mega churches and the political influence.

It is normally thought that politics is out of Christian’s competence. But we all bewail how bad things are going because of the lack of principles and integrity. Politics must be assumed for what it should be: a service area for citizens. The best thing Christians could do is to serve with honesty and that is way, they are who should teach society what’s right.

Politics do not have to be necessarily partisan and electoral. Christians from their condition as of children of God can influence greatly in politics. In fact the church has already spoken on issues such as the abortion, corruption, death penalty and other ethical issues. But all of those issues have a great political weight in our societies.
Whoever takes the Gospel seriously won’t be able to escape from adopting positions with political implications.
From that perspective, mega churches play a very important role in the task of being salt and light to a country. It is not the size which determines the quality of that influence, but from the politicians point of view a very numerous church is better heard and taken into account.

From a mega church you can sensitize politicians about issues that are transcendente to the cause of the Gospel. And with your ethical influence, you can also deter politicians from certain wrong decisions. This is one of the advantages of being a mega cell church.

Being a pastor of a megachurch is a gift that God concedes. It is awarded to people who He has prepared for this purpose. The preparation consists mainly of dying to self daily.
No church can grow more than its pastor. And for the pastor to grow, he must start with his self-denial as basic foundation. The death of the flesh occurs after living successive nights of the soul. The road is not easy, it is rather painful. But if we are talking about a sustainable megachurch over the time there is no other alternative but to go through the valley of the shadow of death over and over again.

The main advantage of planting a church starting with one cell is that all people that come to know Jesus from then on, will grow in a totally cellular environment. That means that the new Christians will be trained for leadership and will have a passion for cell multiplication.
A transition is not necessary since people are already being born in a completely cellular environment. Requires much less time and effort to learn Mandarin in China than to learn it when you are an adult and living in the West. A small cell church’s pastor has the great opportunity to get directly involve in the cell work. Besides teaching his cell model’s values and principles, he can visit each of his church’s cells.
For the members of his church, their pastor’s visit in the cells shows them the appreciation he has for this work. In addition it teaches them the importance of cells for the Christian life.
In one occasion I heard that Larry Stockstill, from Baton Rouge, visits a cell each week. Obviosly, his church is already so numerous that he will probably not finish visiting them all. And if he does, it will take him several years to complete the cycle. But, how inspiring it is for his members to receive their pastor’s visit in the cells! While the cell church is still small, the pastor has the great advantage to make these so motivating visits to each one of his cells.

Diferente de outras “janelas” que se referem a áreas geográficas com necessidade de missões, a janela 4-14 se refere a um segmento etário da população mundial. Estou falando sobre pessoas que tem idade entre 3 e 14 anos.
Crianças e jovens deveriam ser um dos grandes focos da mensagem do evangelho. Nós continuamos repetindo que eles são o futuro da igreja, mas a verdade é que eles precisam ser o presente da igreja. Ou então, a igreja não terá futuro.
50% da população mundial tem idade menor que 25 anos e um terço deles nunca ouviu falar de Jesus. E muitos deles vivem em nossos países ocidentais!
O fato é que a maioria dos cristãos creu em Jesus antes dos 18 anos de idade. Esse fato deveria redirecionar nossos esforços para a janela 4-14. Frequentemente a igreja vê crianças como um ministério que tem que suportar. Na realidade, as crianças são especiais para Deus, e cruciais para a sobrevivência da igreja.

Window 4-14

Unlike other “windows” that refer to a geographical space for missions, window 4-14 refers to an age segment of the world’s population. I’m talking about people who are between 4 and 14 years of age.
Children and youth should be one of the largest addressees of the message of salvation. We always keep on repeating that they are the future of the church, when the truth is that if they are not the present of the church, the church will have no future.
50% of the world’s population is below age 25 and the third part of them have never heard about Jesus. And many of them in our western countries! Like children, have not been offered the right attention. Because, after all, they are just children.
Often, children have been a necessary malum that churches have had to endure. But you only have to acknowledge the fact that most Christians believed in Jesus before they were 18 years old, to redirect efforts toward the window 4-14. An accessible, responsive, manageable and rich in possibilities segment.

Los niños y jóvenes deberían ser uno de los grandes destinatarios del mensaje de salvación. Nos pasamos siempre repitiendo que ellos son el futuro de la iglesia cuando la verdad es que si ellos no son el presente de la iglesia ésta no tendrá futuro.

El 50% de la población mundial se encuentra por debajo de los 25 años de edad y la tercera parte de ellos nunca han escuchado sobre Jesús. ¡Y muchos de ellos en nuestros países occidentales! Como niños, no se les ha brindado la atención debida. Porque, después de todo, solo son niños.

Frecuentemente, los niños han sido un mal necesario que las iglesias han tenido que sobrellevar. Pero basta reconocer el hecho que la mayor parte de cristianos creyeron en Jesús antes de cumplir los 18 años de edad para reorientar los esfuerzos hacia la ventana 4-14. Un segmento accesible, sensible, manejable y rico en posibilidades.

Missions can be understood in a horizontal and in a vertical sence. The mission in the horizontal sence is the territorial expansion of the Gospel. It is about reaching the unreached and bringing them the message of salvation. It is known that most of the unreached groups of people are located in the 10/40 window.

The cell model has proven to be an efficient penetration system in many of those countries where there are severe restrictions on the proclamation of the Gospel by the traditional means. Cell churches are, from that perspective, a training field for those who will be called to those countries.
As for the missions in the vertical sence, it is the extension of the Gospel but in profundity. Is going from reaching the people to make them disciples. It is an effort so that those who have already heard the good news, start living according to them.

In the vertical sence a paradox can be produced: that countries most reached in the horizontal sence be the least evangelized vertically. And, conversely, could be that the least reached horizontally live the Gospel in a greater depth.
In the vertical sence, the cell model also plays an essential role. It is the best environment to make disciples and to take into practice the truth of the Gospel. For such reasons, the cell model and missions are closely related in its dual aspect. Missions are innate to the cell work and combine two aspects of evangelization that should never be separated.

The Cell Church Missionary Network, is a missionary movement that was born in Asia with the motivation of pastor Ben Wong. The network operates with an innovating concept on how to do missions. It specializes in the least reached countries, which coincidentally, are the most closed to the Gospel.
Precisely because the conditions do not allow the missions in the traditional way, we draw upon cell strategy to penetrate with the Gospel from person to person and from house to house. The cell experience is very valuable to develop this new missionary methodology. For that reason, the churches that are already completely cell churches, associate with each other to send leaders that will plant the seed of the Gospel in those countries.
This model does not need missionary agencies. It is about a direct contact between the church that is sending and the church that is already working in those countries. Thus, there are no administrative expenses to cover. The Church’s whole financial support comes to the missionaries that are in the field.
In 2005 the first missionary consultation of CCMN was held in Brazil, for the purpose of involving Latin America’s cell churches in the movement. In our Continent four consultations have been held already. The first missionaries were already sent and are working among the least reached people. It is a pioneering method which is expected to lead to great results.
